The Perfect Family Holiday at Familux Resort in Oberjoch, Germany

It’s hard to know quite where to begin with writing this review because our week away at the Familux Resort in Oberjoch, Bavaria in Germany, was literally, unequivocably and utterly perfect! Perfect, full stop. So there’s no need to read the rest of the blog post although do please stick around because I want to sing from the rooftops just how excellent every element of our stay was because this resort truly sets the bar for family travel and you need to visit it to believe it!

The entire resort, and our experience there, felt like the culmination of a family brainstorm where each member played their part in conjuring up the most incredible resort conceivable, one which caters for every want or need you could possibly hope for, from a vacation, without any compromise whatsoever.

This resort turns the notion on its head that vacations with kids feel like the usual grind of parenting but with a change of scenery. When you stay at Familux, you all get a holiday!  The resort provides parents with a chance to feel fully rested and rejuvenated there, whilst the kids have the time of their lives!

The pictures you see here are admittedly breathtaking (thanks to my camera-yielding talented husband, Peter) but to experience the resort and the jaw-droppingly stunning snow-capped mountains which envelop it, first-hand, is something else. Forever memorable.

It’s a holiday you will still be talking about as a family when your children are grown, no doubt with kids of their own. That memorable.

Luxurious, with a palette of turquoise, lime, lavender, ocean blue, pine and rose gold running throughout the resort, with state-of the-art facilities at every turn from gyms to vast saunas, play areas, heated swimming pools (there aren’t any cold ones thankfully), including a children’s pool with slides both big and small, a hot whirpool, and spa of actual dreams, there is so much to do, you could happily move in for a month and never find yourself bored.

My personal holiday highlight was committing to 100 laps a day in the breathtaking infinity pool, built eye level with the mountains, so that you feel as if you’re swimming into the misty mountainside. I’m not sure I’ve ever felt more relaxed. Next time I’m stressed (any minute now, that view will be my ‘happy place’ thought).

Family saunas were a novel experience for my kids but encouraged in Germany due to their many health benefits and my trio enjoyed using them, especially Florence, who was a fan of both the warm saunas and the ice cold stations outside.

In between all the water activities, we spent time in the Great Outdoors, breathing in the clean mountain area, trailing the resort’s grounds which boasted play areas, swings, slides, tents, dens and even a farm. A fairtyale come to life.

Everything at Familux is designed with children in mind. They are prioritsed in the way the resort is designed, what is on offer to entertain them and how life can be made as stress-free as possible for their parents and guardians during your stay.

From the minute you enter the resort, it hits you how child-centred Familux is, with children’s umbrellas on stands at the entrance, and step ladders in Reception so children can be eye-level with the staff. There are play horses that mimick galloping so children can ride around the lobby, and have fun whilst parents check in, and toadstool style caves for playing Hide and Seek in, as well as cards and board games on offer on the many tables circling the area, for older children. Familux have literally thought of everything. Magical children’s toilets included! See below.

Our huge suite, or apartment, would be more accurate a term, with en suite bathrooms, large travel cot, queen size bed and a room each for the boys with bunk beds (they both opted to sleep in the top bunk), play nook, lounge and walk-in-wardrobe, comprised our new home. We also had a safe patio and garden with BBQ and deck chairs, to call our own. The resort provide toiletries, towels, dressing gowns, big and small, and environmentally friendly flip flops for you to wear freely around the resort. They also arranged for food for us on arrival, knowing that we would reach the resort in the evening. A fridge in the lounge is also a useful addition for those travelling with young children.

Florence adored her surprise nook, where she would play with her dolls, and read with her brothers. Sweet.

When it came to dining, the resort provides you with the same table in their restaurant for the duration of your stay (a smart way to limit stress at mealtimes and having to find a vacant table each time you dine) and the food there, was, without exaggeration, of Michelin standard, with a diverse and delicious ever-changing feast on offer at every meal. The children’s options were equally vast with an onus on healthy, seasonal ingredients and variety. They even made fresh baby food!

Their ice cream style shop area took pride of place, for well deserved treats too (it’s not a holiday without ice cream huh)!

No day was the same and meals or the snack buffet on offer every day, in between meal times (yes, really) so it was impossible to go hungry.

With all the activity, it’s reassuring to know the kids and you can eat throughout the day.

And boy, did we get active (and loved every minute).

A huge bouncing castle stands pride of place outside the resort whenever the sun shines, there are play areas inside and out and adjacent to the bars and restaurants on-site, a soft play with ballpit, a bowling alley, an arcade games room with ping pong tables and climbing wall, a sports hall with basketball hoops (my older boys spent most of their time in), a cinema; gym with moutain views no less (for 16+ guests) as well as children’s clubs you can leave your children at if you wish (all included in the price) for all ages, up to 16, which follows a fun and educational curriculum. There are also activities all throughout the day you can take part in with your children from candle making to yoga! I will never forget how emotive it was hearing the yoga teacher yodeling at the end of a session as we looked out across at the mountains. What an experience!

What a unique resort Familux is.

Florence’s highlight was the farm on-site.

Together, we marvelled at the alpacas, rabbits, goats, donkeys and ponies roaming there. We really did have to check if we weren’t in a Disney live action movie at this point or parallel world!

As you take the enchanted trail to the farm land, you pass a fairtytale house with swings and a sled run which is available in summer, that transforms to a ski area in the winter. I told you there’s nothing they’ve missed in designing Familux.

My husband liked to hike near but further afield than the resort (the terrain isn’t suitable for little ones or prams) and captured waterfalls cascading over shiny rocks and picture-postcard views I must paint now that we’re home. Wow!

Picture-perfect.

Visiting the resort is effortless.

There’s a huge baby and toddler station for parents with young kids, where you can collect complimentary wipes, nappies, baby toiletries, pacifiers, and anything else you might need during your stay. The resort even offers complimetary prams, car seats and cots to limit you needing to pack anything bulky in your case. Nothing is too much trouble.

Florence still likes an oat milk in the evening and the staff would clean her bottle and provide us with large oat milk litres to keep in our fridge so we wouldn’t struggle to keep her happy if she woke at night.

Near the start of the break, I suffered with ear pain and the reception team went above and beyond to arrange a taxi (even paying in advance for me) and securing an appointment with the sweetest doctor in the next town. Despite my broken German, everyone was so accomodating and kind, with the taxi driver even insisting on accompanying me into the surgery so that I wouldn’t get lost.

Once my ears were syringed, it was back to the resort for more fun and r ‘n’ r.

Florence and I treated ourselves to some self-care with a manicure and stickers for Florence, and a calming aromatherapy massage for myself.

Lucky ladies!

What a treat, what a holiday!

A heavenly haven which offers you a chance to breathe deeply and decompress.

This is a resort which feels remote in the best possible way: there’s no traffic or outside noise, just expansive countryside with easy assess to adjacent towns, if needed. You feel completely safe and totally at peace at Familux, and we cannot wait to return again, in the future. This was a holiday of a lifetime and one I know my readers would all love as much as we did. We’re so grateful for the opportunity to visit. Thank you Familux.

Disclosure: The flights, transfers and all-inclusive accomodation for 5 was covered by Familux Resort but as always, my words are honest. We flew from Manchester airport to Memmingen, 40 minutes from the resort.

Excitingly, you can win a stay at this luxury resort over on my Instagram. Good luck!
