When you think of Ireland, you probably imagine fairytale landscapes (it is known as the ‘Emerald Isle’ after all), friendly locals and delicious food and drink (hello soda bread and Irish stew washed down with Guiness and stout). With rugged cliffs, coastal views and ancient castles to admire, Ireland really is a super destination for families for all the above and more and all year round.
However, you know as parents, that planning a trip when you’re taking your kids away with you can be stressful to say the least. This is why you need to start planning from home. For instance, have you thought about how you plan to stay connected while you’re in Ireland? Opting for an eSIM is a superior option over traditional SIM cards, for example, since they can be activated easily, with only a few taps, and let you access a wide variety of benefits. For instance, a Holafly eSIM for Ireland provides unlimited data, no roaming charges, and a fast and reliable internet. You will need to select your trip duration, and after activating it, you will be able to stay connected the entire time you’re away.
In this article, you’ll discover important information about traveling to Ireland, so keep reading to learn more.
Stay safe and healthy
When traveling with kids, the most important thing is safety so being prepared for anything and everything is key. In Ireland, cars drive on the left, so if you’re used to driving on the right, take note and remember that safety rules apply to pedestrians as much as drivers. Also, keep in mind that some roads in Ireland, especially those in rural areas, can be incredibly narrow, so remain cautious if driving or walking. A car seat is mandatory too, if your child is under 150 cm.
Next up, prioritize getting travel insurance. Kids can become sick easily and without warning, which might mean needing to access pharmacies and healthcare. Don’t incur high costs by forgoing health insurance.
Take a small first-aid kit with you (I always pack mine to the brim with plasters, antiseptic cream, Enterosgel to help with tummy bugs and Calpol) so I would advise doing the same.
Planning an itinerary
Planning an itinerary is also part of the journey. A kid-friendly itinerary should combine a daily dose of culture, fun activities, and spending time outdoors (whatever the weather). Do your research and involve the kids in what they want to do and see whilst you’re away.
Take note too, that even though you have made an itinerary, don’t forget to be flexible, and enjoy yourselves, since this is the entire point of a holiday. Don’t forget about the unpredictable weather in Ireland of course, and pack rain gear, wellies as well as your sun hats and sunglasses.
Ideas of activities to try with your kids in Ireland
Ireland offers tons of activities to try with your kids so you’ll never hear, ‘I’m bored’. Here are just some examples of things to do!
Explore ancient castles
Ireland is home to incredible castles the kids will absolutely love.
Malahide Castle is a breathtaking 400-year-old medieval castle located only 20 minutes away from Dublin. The 800-year-old estate features a magical woodland Fairy Trail, the Emerald Isle’s only glass-domed Butterfly House, and a huge playground for hours of fun.
Another dreamy castle is the Blarney Castle and Gardens. A 60-acre estate most famous for the Blarney Stone, which is said to give the gift of eloquence. Visitors can roam around the 1446 medieval fortress, stroll through enchanting botanical spaces like the deadly Poison Garden, and discover the magical ancient Rock Close.
Fun theme parks
Emerald Park, located near Dublin, is the perfect example of a thrilling theme park with 45 rides-yep-45 as well as ziplines and a zoo to boot. There’s something for everyone there.
Westport Adventure Park, in County Mayo, is another great shout: home to playgrounds for toddlers, as well as boasting giant swings, and ziplines for guaranteed family fun.
Animals
Most kids love animals so what could be more fun than a visit to the zoo? Dublin Zoo is brilliant. Little ones can marvel at lions, red pandas, elephants, and gorillas on site and if you’re in County Cork, you must visit the glorious Fota Wildlife Park, a free-roaming safari park, with kangaroos, cheetahs, and giraffes. Wow!
Explore nature
Mother Nature has been truly generous with Ireland, which is why it boasts breathtaking landscapes where you can explore the coast and beaches, as well as countryside as far as the eye can see you can witness by foot, car or even on a bicycle. A must-visit is the picturesque Cliffs of Moher, in County Clare. Stretching for 14km along the Wild Atlantic Way, these 320-million-year-old (yes, you read that right) sea cliffs rise up to 214 meters above the Atlantic Ocean, offering jaw-dropping views, diverse seabird colonies, and coastal walking trails.
Inch Beach makes for a great choice for all of the family thanks to its shallow waters and soft sand so head there for sandcastle building, swimming and surfing!
Ireland is a fascinating country to travel to with your kids, it’s safe, the Irish are friendly and hospitable, and the kids will garner the perfect mix of learning new things thanks to exploring landmarks with joyful outdoorsy fun.
