Most of us want a brighter beginning at the start of the year, so it’s the perfect time for new projects to unfold although I don’t need any excuse here as we renovate our forever home.
However, renovating even one room, as we are now such as the kitchen, can be pretty challenging. High-quality materials and labour charges for professional workers are expensive, which is why so many of us put off changes around the house.
To lower costs and still have beautiful results, I’m considering replacing the kitchen doors to modernise our kitchen. I’ve been doing some research so below I’m sharing the benefits of replacement doors and how to choose the best products for your home!
Replacement doors are budget-friendly
A complete kitchen renovation is not only time-consuming but also costly. Plus the mess can be all consuming, as you need to essentially move all of your kitchen appliances and crockery into another room and its takeaways for the forseeable no doubt!
A great way to update your kitchen without the fuss is with high-quality replacement kitchen doors. They’re affordable and can be installed quickly, with less mess or cost. Modern shaker, high gloss, or acrylic options are all within affordable price ranges too.
Replacement doors are easily installed
If you renovate the kitchen from scratch, the completion process can take anything from a few weeks to several months. On the other hand, replacing the cabinet doors is doable in just a few days, and you can learn how to do it by yourself, to boot.
Here are the steps you must complete:
- Measure for the new door;
- Remove the cabinet door;
- Bore the hinge holes;
- Attach the hinges to the new door;
- Mark and install mounting spots;
- Attach the door;
- Install the cabinet handles;
Replacement doors come in all colours
Replacement doors vary in colour, so you can create the kitchen of your dreams in just a few steps. Work out what would work well with your current flooring, appliances and of course personal style.
Considering they’re more affordable, you can change them more frequently if you wish too. Of course, painting cabinet doors is also an affordable option too meaning updates are stress-free!
How to choose the best replacement doors for your kitchen
While there are numerous types of replacement doors, not all will fit your requirements. They differ in quality and finish.
For example, laminate doors are highly durable due to their three layers composed of paper and plastic resin. Acrylic doors are great for preventing UV light damage, and they are resistant to moisture and scratches. Moreover, acrylic offers an ultra-gloss or smooth matte finish so bare that in mind too.
Vinyl doors are made of MDF panels, which may not be durable but they are affordable. Another version of MDF-based doors includes painted panels with water-based paint or polyurethane coatings. Finally, raw doors allow you to get creative with their design.
How to decorate kitchen doors
If you’re more into DIY projects, then there are other ways to make your kitchen doors stand out besides a fresh coat of paint. For example, you can use wallpaper on the cabinets as a non-permanent solution. You only need spray adhesive and, a decoupage medium if you wish.
If you’re more experienced in crafting, you could try giving the cabinet a trim for a dimensional look. You must measure the cabinet doors to find the amount of moulding needed since you must strip them to the correct size after. Wood glue is also required.
Texture such as ribbed glass or beading panels offers a rustic look with a vintage aesthetic so check those out too.
How to maintain kitchen cabinet doors
While replacing cabinet doors is something we all need to do at some point, you can extend their lifecycle. For eg. when it comes to cleaning, you only need warm water, gentle soap, and a sponge to banish debris. Abrasive cleaners can ruin the paint or the door’s material and are unnecessary. At the same time, cleaning supplies will differ depending on your cabinet material:
- Wood cabinets need gentle cleaners and frequent dusting and polishing;
- Laminate cabinets require mild detergents and soft cloths;
- Painted cabinets need non-abrasive cleaners;
- Metal cabinets are best cleaned with non-acidic cleaners;
One of the simplest, affordable and effective options for cleaning kitchen cabinets is a mix of vinegar and baking soda.
I like to hang towels around the cabinets closest to the sink to prevent spills reaching them, helping them to last longer.
Sunlight can also damage the look of a cabinet door. To ensure the cabinets are not directly exposed to sunlight, choose curtains or blinds over the windows so as to limit the light on brighter days.
