How to Create a Productive Work-from-Home Environment as a Parent

Working from home can prove ideal for working parents but it can also present unique challenges.
Between kids running around, household chores, and making deadlines, finding the right set-up to harness and maintain productivity isn’t always easy.
However, having a set workspace tailored to your unique working needs can help improve your experience tenfold. With the inclusion of a few select home office essentials, you can tranform your work from home life!
Let’s explore the seven steps you need to take to make the most of your personal and professional life.
1. Have a specific work area
Firstly you need to distinguish your work and home life, and one of the easiest ways to do this is to designate a specific area as your workspace. This can be anything from a spare bedroom to an area of the living room you can corden off to dedicate to work. I know entrepreneurs who created home offices complete with ceiling fan installation in garden sheds and even their garages! Anything dedicated which helps you create a physical boundary between work and home life will help you minimize distractions and maintain your focus.
If you find you can’t accomodate your own designated office space at home, then it’s time to get creative! A folding desk or corner table might make the difference between a productive and unproductive work day for you.
The key here is really to establish a consistent location where you can focus solely on work. This will not only help you get into the right mindset but it will also signal to other family members that when you’re in this space, you’re in work mode and shouldn’t be disturbed!
2. Don’t overlook ergonomic furniture
If you spend long days at your desk when you work from home, investing in ergonomic furniture will help you to stay productive whilst importantly, preventing physical strain. If you invest in an ergonomic chair with proper lumbar support and an adjustable height, your everyday comfort will drastically improve. The same can be said for a desk at the right height, which will allow you to work comfortably without hunching over.
If you can, consider purchasing a sit-stand desk that enables you to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day. This will promote better circulation and reduce fatigue, vastly improving your quality of life!
3. Organize your workspace
One of the worst things for productivity is being surrounded by clutter (which will in turn, clutter your mind). To mitigate this, keep your work area organized by decluttering your desk and removing anything that won’t be necessary for your work. A way to do this is using vertical space for storage, such as wall-mounted shelves or pegboards. This will keep the clutter out of your line of sight and will result in a more clean, chicer looking office.
4. Set boundaries with your family
One of the biggest challenges of working from home as a parent is navigating interruptions from family members. The best approach to limiting distractions is to set clear boundaries with all family members and stick to them. Being open and honest will help your family better understand the importance of them steering clear of you during the work day. One way to do this is to be open about your work schedule, and clearly express when you will be in meetings and when noise should be at a minimum level.
5. Have a flexible schedule
If you work for an open-minded company and you can be a bit flexible with your schedule, this might become a saving grace. Unlike a traditional office environment, this will allow your working-from-home environment to be more inclusive of your family’s needs. For example, you might choose to start work earlier in the morning or later in the evening to accommodate family activities during the day.
Another way to approach this is to break your workday into smaller, more digestible segments. This will allow you to manage both work tasks and family responsibilities effectively. Approaching work like this will allow you to stay productive while also making sure that you’re present for your family when they need you most.
6. Utilize technology to stay connected
One of the drawbacks of working from home is that staying connected to colleagues and clients can sometimes be harder. Fortunately, there are many tools available to help you maintain communication and collaboration, even from a distance. If you’re not already familiar with them, video conferencing platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet will allow you to participate in meetings and stay engaged with your team.
Similarly, there are project management tools like Trello, Asana, or Slack that can help you keep track of tasks, deadlines, and team communication so take advantage of these tools! They will enhance your productivity and also help you stay organized and on top of your work responsibilities.
7. Take breaks regularly
It’s easy to get caught up in work, especially when you don’t have coworkers distracting you, and your office is only a few steps away from your living space. It’s important to remember to take regular breaks to maintain your productivity and avoid burnout. It might be wise to incorporate these breaks into your calendar to give yourself a reminder of when to step away, and to take a breath, have a glass of water or go for a short walk. This will also give you time to check in with your family – giving you a better balance between work and quality time at home.
The track to productivity
Creating an oasis of productivity in your home office as a parent will require a good mix of organization, comfort, and flexibility. With the right setup, you can thrive in your work-from-home role while being present and engaged with your family!
Good luck!
