Funny Things My 37 Month Old Said Recently

Bright as a button (I’m trying but failing to keep my bias in check but it’s undeniably true), Florence simply amazes me, and strangers to boot, with her vocabulary, non-stop talking, breadth of comprehension and conversation, and problem solving.

She is lucky to have older siblings, and myself and her grandmother (both former teachers and lecturers) to help support and encourage her. My Mum has already taught her the letters F and V and hopes to teach her to read before she starts school in two years time.

What surprises me more than her observational skills and quite how articulate she is (the health visitor said her speaking skills were at least 2 years ahead when she was reviewed at age 2 1/2) is just how poetic her statements often are. Accidental, I’m sure, but beautiful none the less.

Below, just as I did with the boys when they were small, I’m sharing a few recent things she said lately which were funny and a little bit life-affirming.

“I like nursery, I tidy up the bricks and bits and bobs”.

Seriously to me, “Do you love Daddy?” “Do you love me?”.

When the sky turned from grey with a streak of sunlight fighting through the clouds, “Look at that sunshine, the sun is waking up.”

When I was telling her off for shouting she said, “Are you angry? You should eat”. I had educated her on what it means to be ‘hangry’ the previous week and she remembered and applied it!

Not wanting to wear a scrunchie she said, “These are for babies not big girls. I’m a big girl”.

Everytime she comes home from nursery she asks me, “Did you miss me?”then, “I cried for you Mummy”. She didn’t cry but she wants me to think she did!

When we visited the wondrous Enchantica’s Father Christmas Experience recently in Harrogate, Florence was completely dazzled by the day. The magical decorations, storytelling puppets, magnificent wishing tree, Christmas arts and crafts and the all-singing and all-dancing theatre show with Father Christmas himself, at the end!

When the Head Elf asked the children which Christmas song they wanted to sing, confident little Florence shot her hand up and asked for “Jingle Bells”.

Her singing warmed my heart as she kept repeating “Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle bells” over and over. I still do this when I sing along to songs myself to be honest. Who remembers all the lyrics anyway?!

Like mother, like daughter!

What a clever little sausage.
