Do Men Ever Need Stretch Mark Treatment?
Stretch marks, which are usually associated with weight fluctuation or pregnancy in women, are more common in men than you might think. It’s estimated that around 11% of men have stretch marks. However, it is difficult to be completely accurate as some may not mention them.
How do stretch marks occur?
Stretch marks occur as a result of rapid stretching of the skin, for example, as a result of changes in weight, muscle growth or simply going through adolescence.
While stretch marks do not actually pose any risks to health, there are a growing number of men who seek treatment for aesthetic reasons, particularly when the marks are more noticeable.
Common causes of stretch marks in men
Let’s look at some of the reasons men may consider stretch mark treatment and how this can be managed effectively.
Rapid weight gain or loss
Significant changes in weight can result in stretch marks for men, as they do for women. In cases where weight increases quickly, the skin can struggle to keep up with the expansion and this results in micro-tears just beneath the surface. When weight is lost too fast, similar processes happen and stretch marks are left on the skin as it tries to adjust to the change.
Muscle mass increasing
Those who engage in strength training or intense bodybuilding will often notice stretch marks. They will occur particularly around the thighs, shoulders and arms. Rapid levels of muscle growth force the skin to stretch faster than it should to accommodate the expansion. This results in stretch marks, particularly for those with leaner physiques.
Growth spurts during adolescence
Teenage boys can experience stretch marks during puberty, commonly as a result of sudden growth spurts. The skin on the back, shoulders and thighs can stretch quite rapidly, resulting in visible lines that can also remain noticeable over time.
Genetic factors
Some men may find that they are more genetically predisposed to developing stretch marks. If there are family members who have experienced them, then there is a greater chance of developing them, even in cases of moderate skin stretching.
Medical conditions and medications
There are some medical treatments and conditions, for example the prolonged use of corticosteroids that can cause stretch marks. Plus, if you suffer from illnesses that affect hormone and weight levels, these too can contribute to the formation of stretch marks. When this happens and there is no clear cause, it is worth seeking medical advice.
Treatments for stretch marks in men
Fortunately, there are a number of different treatment options available to men who have stretch marks. These include topical creams and oils, laser therapy and microdermabrasion with chemical peels, as well as focusing on good hydration and nutrition.
Whilst stretch marks are a completely natural occurrence, it is understandable that some men might opt for treatment in order to boost their confidence. This is most likely when the marks they have are particularly visible or when they cause self-consciousness. Others may prefer to embrace their stretch marks and see them as a sign of physical transformation, growth or strength training progress. In this way, men and women have very similar approaches to what they might choose to do, or not do, about their stretch marks.
Ultimately, the choice to treat stretch marks is down to personal preference. Whatever treatment path individuals choose to pursue, one thing remains clear. Whether they opt for creams or professional procedures, maintaining healthy skin as a result of hydration, moisturisation and balanced nutrition will always be a wise strategy.
If you do decide to go the professional procedure route, ensure that the provider you opt for has all the appropriate qualifications, leading to satisfying results.
