One of this family’s happy places has to be Roundhay Park in Leeds. Pure bliss.
We headed there last week and I took along my new camera (Fuji XM1) (as you can see I was pretty snap happy) and not to be outdone, Oliver brought his newly purchased toothbrush (which lights up for a whole minute to encourage brushing). Nice. Most kids take balls to the park, my kid takes a toothbrush!
Now some facts about this staggeringly beautiful park…Roundhay Park is actually one of the biggest city parks in Europe with over 700 acres (2.8 km2) of parkland, lakes, woodland and gardens owned by Leeds City Council making it free for all to enjoy and that we do!!
…It’s also one of the most popular attractions in Leeds, with nearly one million people visiting each year (with my Big Fat Greek family contributing at least half those numbers)!
There are two lakes at the park but we tend to head to the larger one titled the Waterloo Lake taking it’s name from the soldiers who built it after they’d returned from the Battle of Waterloo unemployed and keen to work.
It took them two years to build, has an average depth of 60 feet (18 m) deep and covers 33 acres (0.13 km2).
…4 year old Oliver’s little legs now manage the 1 1/2 mile radius (despite the mud) as I push Alexander along in his pram just close enough to stop and feed the ducks, gasp at the elegant beauty of the swans and take in the captivating views.
We always feel ready to face the world again after a long walk round the lake…I wonder what Oliver will bring with him next time we go!
Where’s your happy place?
Oliver’ fab wellies were gifted by Muddy Puddles, read the post about them and our day at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park here.
