A Review of The Very Young Person’s Guide to Christmas Carols

A Review of The Very Young Person’s Guide to Christmas Carols

In this house, we tend to refrain from putting up a Christmas tree and our festive decorations until after mine and Florence’s birthdays in November are out of the way!

Once our joint celebrations are done and dusted (Frozen-themed this year as chosen by Florence), it will be time to prepare for our first family Christmas in our new forever home, and embrace the festivities.

That being said, it’s never too early to start reading Christmas books in my book (get it?!) because all books can and should be enjoyed all year round.

A bit like Christmas pyjamas here where we twin over the Christmas season in our festive sleepwear, we continue wearing them long after Christmas!

But back to books.

We were kindly sent the newly published book: The Very Young Person’s Guide to Christmas Carols in the latest collaboration between DK (Penguin Random House) and Classic FM, an enchanting, interactive, educational and inspirational read!

The third book in the series of books from DK and Classic FM’s partnership, following immersive guides to both the Orchestra and Ballet Music respectively, The Very Young Person’s Guide to Christmas Carols completes the trio of heartwarming kids’ stories with music to delight, at the push of a button.

An interactive experience, The Very Young Person’s Guide to Christmas Carols is where literacy meets music, bringing Christmas carols to life for little ones.

Watching my twelve year old Alexander read and sing carols to my two year old, Florence made me wish Christmas was tomorrow! A core memory for us all, documented here in our family archive.

Original, diverse and inclusive illustrations perfectly capture the beautiful story of carols from two children’s perspectives Arthur and Holly, while the sound button brings the iconic music pieces to life.

Every spread of pages features fascinating facts about Christmas carols and their origins and is guaranteed to utterly delight and inspire.

This vibrant book would make a perfect early Christmas present, or for Christmas Day of course, perhaps even encouraging you to sit and sing around the Christmas tree as a family together or before you pop some carrots and a drink out for Father Christmas.

It would also make a wonderful addition to a small collection of Christmas presents in a Christmas Eve box, if you follow that tradition, to be opened before the big day!

It promises to sprinkle some joy into your festivities.

Just look at Florence’s face! She was dancing to the music when this photo was taken. A core memory unlocked.

Written by Tim Lihoreau and Phil Noyce, it really is an unmissable festive book for your little ones.

An experienced creative partnership, Tim has a degree in music from the University of Leeds and was a professional pianist. Along with his wife, he runs amateur choirs in his home village and also regularly plays the organ at his local church.

Phil has been the Managing Editor of Classic FM since March 2020, having written for a huge array of radio programmes and presenters, reaching millions of people. He is a keen musician who plays the cello and electric bass.

All of my children have been lifelong fans of Classic FM as I’ve played it since birth to them. It never fails to soothe them on car journeys or send them to sleep on a night.

The publisher DK’s mission is heartwarming, ‘Knowledge is one of life’s biggest adventures. The more you know, the more exciting life gets. We’re here to change perspectives, open doors, fire up fascinations. Every book and every experience we create is an invitation to an
exciting new adventure’. They certainly forfil this promise with their series.

We were kindly gifted this book in return for an honest review.
