9 Accessories To Help You Rediscover Your Style

Motherhood often feels like three full-time jobs with errands, school runs, and work threatening to obliterate any kind of personal style. Hello sportswear every day! I’ve recently been putting more effort into my clothes and it’s really helped me to feel more confident and in control of my crazy-busy life. I’m a creative person and love putting outfits and accessories together but I got into a rut of opting for the same black sportswear every morning and losing my sense of idenity in the process. Adding more colour and texture to my wardrobe after a recent colour analysis has been utterly transformative so I wanted to share some tips in case you’re in a style rut like I was, focusing on accessories primarily, which can help bring some pizzazz to your life.

I’m a big believer in not leaving anything for best and wear all of my jewellery, pretty much, precious or otherwise, every day now! I hope these tips help inspire you!

1. Classic Tote Bag
A well-designed, chic tote bag is a must-have. Not only is it multifunctional for piling up diapers, snacks, your wallet, notebooks, kids’ toys, and phone, but a good-quality tote is timeless.

Seek clean lines, durable materials such as leather, vegan leather or canvas, and neutral colors that match just about anything in your closet should be your priority.

A structured tote will pair well with everything from casual attire such as jeans and a t-shirt, skirts and blazers and even flowing maxi dresses. And, of course, it will be large enough to carry just about everything. You can opt for premium brands such as Birkin if you’re lucky enough to be invited to purchase, and YSL or more wallet-friendly brands which don’t compromise on quality such as Marc Jacobs or Karl Lagerfeld.

2. Statement Sunglasses
A cute pick of sunglasses will totally hide the fact you’re having sleepless nights thanks to your kids, and make the most tired amongst us (guilty) look chic. Either opt for aviators for a refined and sleek look, or my favourites, oversized frames for a touch of glam. Sunglasses go with absolutely anything and everything. My favourite brands are Chanel, Ray-ban, and from the high street, H&M.

3. Chic Scarves
With a well chosen scarf, you can make not only outfit stand out, but also accentuate your entire ensemble. For instance, if you’re wearing a plain or monochrome outfit, try draping a light silk scarf around your neck in a bolt of colour or a pattern to break up the look. Scarves are perfect for midseason and can be paired along with casual jeans and a t-shirt and dresses. Check out Vinted for great offers on beautiful scarves from Hermes to Gucci, Burberry and more. I bought a beautiful Hermes silk scarf in purple and azure blue I love to wrap around my bags or neck depending on what I’m wearing.

4. Layered Necklaces
Necklaces, especially those from LabGrown.com are utterly stunning without the huge price tags of mined diamonds. Whilst all my diamonds are mined, I’m looking for a lab grown diamond necklace, and friends recommended Lab Grown.com for their stunning pieces. I personally prefer gold or platinum when it comes to necklaces suiting my olive skin colour, and like to wear several at a time, layering them up. Don’t be afraid to use necklaces of different lengths or textures in whichever metals you like.

5. Wide-Brimmed Hat
A wide-brimmed hat is a timeless accessory. Whether you’re headed out for weekend brunch, vacationing, or attending a family gathering, a wide-brimmed hat will act as a statement piece providing you with the wow factor. It not only protects you from the sun, but elevates your look, whatever you’re wearing. Opt for neutral colors like black, beige, or navy, or even a burst of color in the ribbon or band. Hats work well with everything from casual sundresses to jeans, button-up shirts and dresses, long and short, making you look like a movie star!

6. Classic Watch
A vintage, elegant watch will be the final touch that pulls together the entire outfit. Minimalist and sleek in gold, silver, stainless steel or leather will work with practically any wardrobe in most situations from the office in a tailored suit to a casual weekend. The functionality of a watch extends beyond merely keeping track of time. It makes for a fashionable statement piece that adds a touch of sophistication without much fuss.
Pro tip: put your money into a classic design. A good watch stands alone very well or can be stacked or mixed with other bracelets for style. Favourite brands include Rolex and Cartier and for more price-friendly opt for Vivienne Westwood or Tory Burch.

7. Sleek Belt
My old pops claims that a single leather belt has the power to add a great deal of polish to your outfit. A black belt can also define and sculpt your waist with ease whether you pair it with high-waisted pants or a floral tea dress. Opt for a coloured belt that contrasts with the colour you’re wearing so it stands out. Timeless belts also add structure to your outfit. I love my Loewe belt and wear it with jeans and dresses alike.

8. Chunky Bracelet or Bangle
I adore bracelets and feel lucky to have inherited some beautiful gold charm and tennis bracelets, respectively from my mom recently. I tend to wear bracelets more on a weekend for practical reasons (my career as a writer means I like my wrists free of jewellery) and like to match them with my earrings be it gold hoops or diamond studs. Bangles and bracelets add personality, colour and texture to outfits and the more meaningful, the better in my opinion, so opt for birthstones or precious gems which reflect your life milestones or trigger a beautiful memory. My blue sapphire stud earrings, and sapphire and diamond bracelet represent my two sons and my pink sapphire ring represents my daughter for example.

9. Stylish Flats or Sneakers
Seek clean and sleek minimal designs in a neutral color palette when it comes to shoes and I prefer flats or sneakers in the week. From dresses to jeans, either will work easily with your outfit. My Gucci loafers are timeless and my collection of trainers spanning LV to high street stores like Zara range from sporty to stylish!

I hope these tips help you rediscover your style as I have.
