Review of Kelo-Cote Silicon Gel for my C-Section Scar

In Association with Kelo-Cote.

When I was approached three months ago to review Kelo-cote® gel on my C-section scar, six months post op, I was hesitant. A fear of the unknown and having never applied cream to my original, first C-section scar, I was unsure it was for me. However after researching the gel, I was impressed with the evidence*: it is clinically proven to smooth, soften and flatten scars, reduce redness and discolouration and relieve pain and itching. With a red, raised and angry scar after my second C-section, I decided to try out the gel.

Kelo-cote gel

Morning and night I applied a tiny rice shaped amount (you only need a little) onto the clean and dry scar. The gel creates a light protective barrier** with an immediate (not uncomfortable) tightening around the scar. Drying quickly with no stickiness it was easy to do straight out of the shower or bath. After as little as three weeks, I noticed my scar lightening in colour and a definite reduction in itching. I couldn’t believe how quickly it had started working on my scar.

Five weeks on, the redness continued to reduce and itching had gone completely. I started to use it on a small scar on my right hand from a graze as a child. I even renamed it the ‘miracle cream’ as it continued to help fade my scar.

I even took it on holiday to Portugal and despite my scar being low down enough to wear a bikini, knowing it was constantly fading gave me greater confidence by the pool and sea.

I have now been using Kelocote for three months and am simply astounded by how light my once red and angry C-section scar is. I wholeheartedly recommend this gel for anyone wanting to reduce the visibility of scars and will be continuing use…who knows maybe the scar will disappear completely! Hehe!

Here comes the science bit:

*Kelo-cote® is recommended by physicians all around the world and is the most studied topical scar product, with more than 2,000 patients participating in a variety of published clinical studies. An observational study conducted by Sepehrmanesh, et al, of 1522 patients using Kelo-cote® to treat scars (Komp Dermatologie 2006;1:30-32), demonstrated the effectiveness and tolerability of the product. Both physicians and patients were satisfied with Kelo-cote® and the therapeutic success achieved in terms of scar appearance and feel.

Kelo-cote® gel self-dries within 4-5 minutes to a waterproof gas permeable membrane** that acts like an extra layer of skin. It helps soften, flatten and smooth raised scars whilst maintaining the moisture balance and elasticity of the adjacent skin.

It also reduces discolouration, redness and associated itching, pain and discomfort of scars. Kelo-cote® can be used on flexures, joints and irregular surfaces as well as large scar areas. It can also be used in conjunction other treatment options such as pressure garments.
