How to Use the 1-3-5 Rule to Keep Your Home Spotless

Cleaning can often feel like a never-ending task. There’s always something that needs doing, and when the list of chores starts piling up, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But what if there was a simple, structured way to tackle household cleaning without feeling like it’s taking over the entire day? That’s where the 1-3-5 organising rule comes in.

This method helps to break down cleaning into manageable chunks, allowing for steady progress without burnout. It’s all about prioritisation and making cleaning work around a busy schedule rather than becoming an all-day event.

What is the 1-3-5 Rule?

The idea is straightforward: each day, focus on one big task, three medium tasks, and five small tasks. Instead of tackling an entire home in one go, this method prioritises efficiency and prevents burnout. It creates a sense of structure and achievement without making cleaning feel like a full-time job.

This rule works because it sets realistic expectations. It’s easy to assume that everything will be cleaned in one marathon session, but in reality, that often leads to frustration and exhaustion. With the 1-3-5 rule, there’s balance – important tasks get done without ignoring the smaller details.

How to Apply the 1-3-5 Rule to Cleaning

1 Big Task: This is the most significant cleaning job of the day, usually something that takes a bit more time or effort. Think deep-cleaning your bathroom,  tackling the entire kitchen, or decluttering a wardrobe. Flooring should be included in this task, whether it’s mopping, polishing wooden floors, or giving carpets a deep clean. These are the jobs that, when completed, provide the biggest sense of accomplishment and make the most noticeable difference in the home.

3 Medium Tasks: These are the jobs that still take effort but aren’t as time-consuming as the big task. Examples include dusting the living room, vacuuming the carpets and sweeping the vinyl flooring, or cleaning out the fridge. These tasks are essential for maintaining a tidy home but are manageable alongside other daily activities.

5 Small Tasks: The small tasks are quick wins that help maintain order and cleanliness. This could be making the bed, wiping down kitchen counters, taking out the bins, or putting away laundry. They might seem minor, but they contribute to the overall cleanliness of the home and prevent things from piling up.

Why This Rule Works for Cleaning

One of the biggest challenges with cleaning is knowing where to start. It’s easy to get lost in a whirlwind of chores, jumping from one task to another without much progress. The 1-3-5 rule eliminates decision fatigue by setting clear priorities each day.

It also prevents that all-or-nothing approach to cleaning. Too often, there’s a tendency to either do a huge cleaning spree or nothing at all. This method keeps things consistent, making it easier to maintain a tidy home over time. Plus, ticking off completed tasks provides a sense of accomplishment, which can be a great motivator.

Adapting the Rule for Different Lifestyles

This strategy isn’t one-size-fits-all, but it can be adapted to suit different situations.

For Busy Households: In a home with children or multiple occupants, cleaning can feel never-ending. The 1-3-5 rule allows tasks to be shared out among family members, making it easier to stay on top of mess without relying on one person to do everything. Assigning different tasks to different people keeps things running smoothly and prevents overwhelm.

For Those Short on Time: Not everyone has hours to dedicate to cleaning each day. The beauty of this system is that it can be adjusted based on available time. If a particularly hectic day makes even this approach seem like too much, reducing it to a 1-2-3 plan still keeps things on track.

For Deep Cleaning Days: While the 1-3-5 rule works best for regular upkeep, it can also be adapted for deeper cleaning sessions. On a weekend or dedicated cleaning day, it’s possible to scale up – perhaps tackling two big tasks instead of one, or doubling the number of medium jobs.

Helpful Tips for Sticking to the Rule

Even the best cleaning plans can fall apart without the right approach.

Write it down: Whether on a whiteboard, planner, or notes app, having a written list makes it easier to stay accountable and track progress.

Be realistic: Some days might not allow for all nine tasks. That’s okay! The key is consistency, not perfection.

Tackle the big task early: Getting the most time-consuming job out of the way first makes everything else feel easier.

Adjust as needed: Some homes might need more frequent deep cleans in certain areas. Customising the approach ensures it remains practical.

Just remember that cleaning doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Go at your own pace!
