Turning Red

Film Review of Turning Red

Turning Red- Disney +

To celebrate new kids’ film, Turning Red, from streaming on Disney +, we were kindly gifted a bonanza box of film goodies from caps to cameras, donuts and even Tamagotchis (remember those 80s babies?) to celebrate this must-see movie.

We’re film obsessed here so love a chance to review a new movie!

Turning Red film

Turning Red tells the story of Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang), a 13-year-old Canadian Chinese teen who turns into an 8-foot red panda whenever she becomes overly excited or upset. A metaphor for starting her period and maturing.

An important film which covers both the physical and emotional aspects of womanhood, this is vital viewing for boys as much as it is girls and it’s never too early to normalise periods in my opinion (both my sons were familiar with periods pre-movie). It actually brings to light quite how infrequent these important topics are actually covered in mainstream movies, and we’re all for it here.

Witty, honest and relateable, this is an original film about the most universal of topics: growing up. It’s transparency on quite how hard it can be emotionally is refreshing. It’s exactly what children need right now during the most challenging of times, historically. The film teaches children to face their emotions head-on and provides them with a mental first aid kit in which to deal with stress. All via compelling storytelling.

It taught me a thing or two, too.
