holiday in Cannes, South of France

Are you going on holiday in the October half-term like we are? If so, you’ll need to ensure your trip is ABTA-approved so you can relax knowing that you’ve booked with a reputable company.

We’re going away to Amsterdam and in this blog I’ll be sharing why we’ve chosen to book with an ABTA member, why we’ve chosen October to go away and why we regularly choose this time of the year to travel with the kids.

Who is ABTA?

ABTA is ranked the UK’s most trusted travel association and has been at the heart of the travel industry for almost 70 years. It offers advice and guidance to the travelling public and works with its Members on health and safety and promoting responsible tourism both at home and abroad.

Booking with an ABTA member means you can expect high standards from your holiday provider because they adhere to ABTA’s code of conduct. You’ll also be reassured to know that package holidays sold to you in the European Economic Area (EEA) by ABTA members are financially protected, so if the worst were to happen and your travel company fails, you’ll be able to continue your holiday as planned or get your money back.

Check out the benefits of booking with an ABTA approved travel company here: http://bit.ly/31iogBS.

Why Amsterdam in October?

I can’t wait to go away in the October half-term break and will be booking with an ABTA member, as always. I can’t wait to get away after this first school term. It’s always a shock to the system getting back to routine after so many weeks off over the summer and I feel I need time off more than ever then so a holiday in October will help us to relax!

Amsterdam looks picture-perfect and I’m excited to fill my Insta grid with holiday spam (apologies in advance)! Did you even go away if you didn’t post on Instagram, though, ha?

We usually go abroad in the summer months but felt October would be a little quieter, a lot cheaper, and still warm enough to be out and about before the days get too short and cold. I’ll keep you updated on how the trip goes.

Why we travel

perfect beach

Nothing beats the gift of travel in my opinion, and no more so than when you get to see the world through your children’s eyes as they explore and relish new places, foods and cultures.

I distinctly remember many ‘first moments’ with the kids on holidays over the years from flying long haul to Jamaica, witnessing the boys swimming in the sea in the Algarve, riding on a carousel in a fairground in Cannes and playing pooh sticks on the Yorkshire coast when we visited a quaint cottage there, to name just a few.

Both boys still speak of the sweet friendships they made on holiday, which have all been truly formative experiences for them. Holidays are a chance for you and your children to grow, learn, develop and most importantly, have fun.

Why and where I recommend travelling to in October

October really is the perfect time to get away. It’s still warm in Europe (you can swim in the sea) and Cyprus, Spain, France, Italy and Greece are fairly short flights away and perfect locations for beach, culture and fab food hits for all the family!

Nice, Cannes and Grasse in particular are places I’ve visited since I was a baby so feel like home to me, and being just a short flight from the UK make them a sweet spot to take the kids. While it won’t be as warm as the summer out there, you can still enjoy the beach and eat al fresco in the South of France, and the shopping there, is the best in the world as far as I’m concerned – you can also visit patisseries and shop in the local boutiques for pretty dresses (my personal fave).

We love San Pedro/Marbella too in October as it tends to stay warm there with even their winters proving to be mild.

All of these European destinations are easy to fly to with regional airports such as East Midlands, Birmingham, Bristol, Southampton, Southend and Leeds, as well as your main London airports, offering regular flights over half-term and beyond.

Don’t dismiss the train either.

We travelled via Eurostar to the historical city of Avignon a few years back over the summer, catching the TGV further south which enabled us to see parts of the region we’d otherwise have missed. So you could find a good value deal in October – just check it’s with an ABTA member by looking for the logo and cross-checking on ABTA’s website.

City breaks work well for a family break in October half term too.

We visited Santa in Lapland last year before heading to Prague for a hit of culture along with some spa days for good measure. I also recommend Paris and taking the kids to Disneyland is on our list.

Lapland Finland

If you’re looking more long haul, try Disneyland Florida, it’s always less crowded but still sunny in October.

How to plan your October half term break

Do some research and work out what’s best for your family. Check out an ABTA member’s website or call them and they can offer some great advice on where to go.

Let me know if you’re planning to go on holiday this October half term or beyond in the comments, and don’t forget to check your travel providers are ABTA members. You can search on ABTA’s ‘Find a Member’ page http://bit.ly/2PvSekj to check the holiday company you’re booking with is approved.

You can also head to ABTA’s useful ‘Planning and booking a holiday’ page for more details on why you should book with an ABTA member. It also offers tips on getting travel insurance too.

If you’re planning to travel to the EU after 31 October, ABTA has important information on Brexit which travellers need to know. They’re saying that while flights, ferries and trains will still be operating, travellers should be aware of issues around passports, driving licenses, mobile roaming fees and taking your pet abroad. Find out more at: abta.com/Brexit.

Excitingly, ABTA is running a competition with me to win an ultimate MEGABOOM 3 Bluetooth Speaker for your holiday, worth £169.99, your perfect holiday companion.
