5 More Outdoor Sports To Try This Season

The summer season is nearly here and this is the best time of the year to power-up on vitamin D. Naturally, you want to be on the safe side and use sunscreen protection, but, direct sunlight is beneficial not just for your physical but also your mental health.

Yet, sunbathing isn’t for everyone.

The good news is that it doesn’t have to be. You can spend time outdoors without sunbathing. For instance, there are plenty of outdoor sports to try this summer, including rock climbing, kayaking, trail running, mountain biking, and stand-up paddle boarding. But if you’re still itching to try something new, or simply want another excuse to spend more time outside, here are five more outdoor sports that are fun, feel-good, and totally doable, even if you’re not the ‘sporty’ type.

Open Water Swimming

There’s something uniquely calming about swimming outdoors. Whether it’s a calm lake, a quiet stretch of river, or a sheltered bit of sea, open water swimming offers both a physical workout and a mental reset. The cool water can feel bracing at first, but it soon becomes meditative.

You don’t need to be an expert swimmer either. Many lakes and beaches across the UK now offer supervised swim zones and groups for beginners. Just remember to check water safety guidelines, go with a buddy, and wear a bright swim cap for visibility.

Nordic Walking

It might sound like something reserved for snowy slopes, but Nordic walking is actually a brilliant all-weather activity here in the UK. It involves using specially designed poles to engage your upper body as you walk, turning a gentle stroll into a full-body workout.

Perfect for improving posture, balance, and joint support, it’s especially popular with those looking for low-impact movement that still feels energising.

Yoga in Nature

If your usual yoga routine takes place in a living room or studio, why not try moving it outdoors? Literally! Practicing yoga in nature, whether in a park, garden, or even on the beach, can help you feel more grounded and present.

You don’t need any fancy equipment beyond a mat or towel. It’s a beautiful way to reconnect with your body and the natural world and start the summer season feeling refreshed.

Archery

Archery is one of those activities that feels timeless, focused, and quietly powerful.

It’s also surprisingly accessible. Many local clubs offer beginners’ sessions, and it’s a great option for those who might not enjoy traditional cardio. Plus, it’s something you can do with older children or teens, adding a bit of adventure to family time. Who doesn’t want to feel like Robin Hood?

Scuba Diving

Scuba diving might sound like something reserved for tropical holidays, but it’s increasingly accessible, even for beginners. Of course, you want to take the time to learn how to scuba dive first. But once you know the basics, it can open up a lifelong love of deeper ocean waters.

Besides, it’s an unforgettable way to experience the wonder of the natural world from a totally different perspective. This is a great activity, especially if you already enjoy swimming and want to do something more in the water.

Being active outdoors is the way to keep your body youthful and healthy this summer. Besides, it’s the perfect blend of sporty and fun to enjoy with the family.
