Carol Smillie

Carol Smillie is a 53yr old mother of 3 teenagers, probably best known as a TV presenter on British screens over the last 20 years, she has now set up her own business DiaryDoll with friend, ex-British No 1 tennis player Annabel Croft.

Describe a typical day for you?

I have no such thing, but lately I walk my 2 black labradors in the morning before heading into the office to work on DiaryDoll. That involves raising purchase orders, contacting retailers, arranging meetings, dealing with our manufacturers and of course keeping on top of social media with our intern Jenni.

What do you feel are your biggest achievements?

Undoubtedly my 3 fantastic kids, my husband Alex and I are so proud of them, Work wise, I have loved my 20+ years in TV, but it was time to step aside and try something new. I have always liked pushing myself out of my comfort zone, and starting our own business is about as far out there as I’ve ever been!

What’s in your handbag?

Loads of stuff! Tissues, phone, pens, toothpicks, business cards, make up bag (obvs!) purse, headphones, and always a pair of DiaryDolls!

They’re an amazing conversation piece, as nobody believes how soft they are until they actually see and feel them! (DiaryDolls are pretty pants with a secret waterproof panel for periods, pelvic floor and post maternity problems).

What are your ambitions in life?

  1. be happy  2. be happy

What advice would you give your pre-baby self that you now know having had a child?

What on earth did you worry so much about? You are a good mother, you’re not perfect, you never will be and it’ll all be alright in the end!

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

Five years older. I have no preconceptions beyond that.

What advice would you give a budding entrepreneur?

Be careful about sharing too much information in your excitement.

Make sure you listen to honest feedback, especially if it’s not what you want to hear, and make sure you’ve done your market research before you chuck a load of money at anything.

Finally, happiness is…

Having the love of your family around you.

DiaryDoll are the perfect pants for periods, pelvic floor or post-maternity.

DiaryDolls are lightweight and extremely soft, they contain a secret waterproof panel to protect clothing or bedding perfect for sport, overnights, school or travel.

Machine washable, they look and feel exactly like your favourite pants, worn together with your normal protection, nobody need ever know!

Such a lovely interview, so down to earth. Sounds like a great idea too! My timeline always seems to be full of trampolining and sneezing mums having accidents 😉 xx

  2. Mama and More aka Zaz

What an interesting product, for something that affects so many women yet is rarely ever spoken about. Great interview (once again), I like her positivity and common sense approach and wise words about entrepreneurship. Wishing Carol continued success.

  3. Fiona @ Free Range Chick

I’d love to know what inspired Carol and Annabel to create Diary Dolls! An interesting product indeed. Ithought that I hadn’t seen Carol on the box for a while. She’s been busy! Great interview XX

  4. International Elf Service

That’s a great interview and Carol sounds lovely and very down to earth. I’ve never heard of Diary Dolls and will look into them. They might be just the thing for my pregnant and post partum Mums in my practice… you really do learn something new every day!

Love her answers – short but say so much. And her advice for budding entrepreneurs is spot-on! Never knew Diary doll but I do now – great idea.
