Wonderful Women: Interview with Photographer Kirsty Mattsson
My interview with photographer Kirsty Mattsson…
Kirsty runs a bespoke, Yorkshire-based, portrait photography business specialising in weddings, lifestyle photography, and family and baby portraits.
She loves getting the best out of people and is passionate about giving her clients unique, creative, vibrant images that will be treasured and passed on to future generations.
Great photography is about capturing personalities, emotions and memories of special moments and she believes that the best way to achieve this is to get to know her clients and bring the photography service to them.
By photographing her clients in their own homes or on location in places that have special personal meaning to them, she puts the photography in the context of their own lives, making it relaxed and authentic.
Incredible photographer Kirsty gifted us a family shoot recently, along with a style shoot for myself and re-branded head shots of me for both my blogs-I loved them all!
You can win a photo shoot with Kirsty worth £445 HERE too.
Describe a typical day in your life?
There really is no typical day, particularly for photographers that work on location. This is one of the great things about this business, you never know what will come up. Some days I’ll be photographing a 12-hour wedding, taking family portraits on location or doing a newborn session. Other days I’ll be in front of my computer doing editing, admin, designing albums or doing online marketing. There are also the big fayres to attend for marketing directly to clients and networking with other businesses. It often feels like an endless list of things to do, but it certainly never gets boring.
What do you feel are your biggest achievements?
I would say setting up and running my own business. Everyone, including myself, underestimates how much effort it takes to get a business up and running. It is a great deal of hard work and stress but I’m so proud of the fact I have now done it. It is a dream come true to be my own boss doing something I love, and worth all the hard work. I still love it when I pick up one of my own business cards and say to myself, “wow, that’s my own business”.
What is in your handbag/ satchel?
I wish I could go around with just a handbag – that would save my back! My photography bag is a bit bigger than that and crammed full with heavy equipment. I take my photography gear with me everywhere, even if I’m having the day off work, because I know what will happen if I go out without it; some amazing event will unfold in front of my eyes and I would wish I had my camera with me!
What are your ambitions in life?
To become truly recognized for my own style of photography. I’d like people to look at an image and know that was taken by Kirsty Mattsson. I’d like to take my business as far as I can, and I’m prepared to keep working and learning to constantly improve. You never stop learning with photography, it is an art form and you can always learn new techniques, get inspiration from other photographers and further develop your style.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
Doing exactly what I‘m doing now but just in a bigger way, expanding the business to do more overseas work and employing someone to help with all that paperwork!
What advice would you give a budding photographer?
Get excellent photography training and do not underestimate the importance of business training. Find the best photography mentors who are successfully running exactly the type of business you want to run and get training from them.
Keep in mind however, that there are many opposing opinions out there from different photographers on every aspect of photography and business.
Listen to others’ opinions and advice but realise that no single opinion is 100% right, and what works for some photographers may not necessarily be right for your business.
Take advice on board but don’t be afraid to go with your gut instinct and do what you think is right for your own business.
Creating that perfect image where all the elements such as composition, colour, lighting, location, and expression all come together to make that picture you just fall in love with. There is nothing better than that!
