Wonderful Women Interview with Caprice

It’s time for my Wonderful Women feature – a series of Q&As celebrating all the incredible and inspiring ladeez out there!

This time, I had the pleasure of talking to Caprice ahead of the launch of her debut autobiography My Boys, My Boy, My Business, which is out now through Blink Publishing. I met Caprice last month at BritMums Live and she’s one warm, genuine and truly charismatic gal. 

Achieving fame as a top model, Caprice is now an extremely successful business woman and entrepreneur as the CEO and founder of the fabulous lingerie brand, By Caprice.

We feel we know you from the media Caprice but how you do you describe yourself?

I have integrity, am ambitious, loyal, honest, hard working and a grafter. I’m a doting mother, a health fanatic and a people’s person. I believe in karma and being kind to people. It doesn’t cost anything and it makes you feel good and everyone else around you. 

Describe a typical day for you?

My days are never the same but it usually entails waking up early with my boys – feeding them and getting them ready for the day. I sometimes find time to meditate for 20 minutes before work. My working day can vary greatly depending on the time of year and what projects I have going on.

Usually I am in and out of meetings all day (from buyers to planning meetings) as well as showbiz commitments such as conducting interviews or speaking to my manager about a new TV show, etc. I am also back and forth from my office to check in on the boys and at lunchtime I will make them their favourite meal before heading back to the office.

What do you feel are your biggest achievements?

My boys. I’m so proud of them. 

What’s in your handbag? 

My wallet, my mobile, Lancôme under eye cream for my dark circles, a toy fire truck, 2 nappies and cotton squares with water in them in a Tupperware container!

What are your ambitions in life? 

To be the best mum I can be, to expand my businesses and to keep being charitable.  

What advice would you give your pre-baby self that you now know, having had children?

I would have started looking for my prince charming at 30 and not kissed as many toads.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

My number one priority is my children so probably doing a lot of homework and more play dates and doing the school runs and after school activities while of course running my businesses.

What advice would you give a budding fashion designer/ entrepreneur?

Running your own business has its challenges but to be successful you must have absolute passion for what you do. Passion is important because it’s likely you won’t see a return for three to five years. You have to stick with your business idea; have tenacity and be agile.

Don’t be greedy. Particularly in retail, consumers are smart and they want quality at a competitive price. Think longevity and you will earn more in the long term.

Also, understand cash flow – it is your bible. 

Failure is OK – if your first idea doesn’t work, be smart enough to walk away and start again.

Look after your team. Get the best and most qualified professionals. It will cost more but you’ll make more in the long run.

Finally, happiness is…

At home with my kids. I remember back in my modelling days, catching private planes, presenting an MTV Award with Steven Tyler and glamorous photo-shoots all over the world, but the biggest joy in my life now is seeing my boys smile back at me and saying ‘Mama’. Wow, how times have changed.
