Bright young thing Lupita Nyong’o dazzling in Gucci at Cannes
I’ve just returned from the most incredible weekend at 68th Cannes Film Festival and it’s safe to say it really is the most glamorous occasion in the world, so much so even the paparazzi wear black tie!
And it’s transpired that the organisers are super keen to keep that title, as it was reported just yesterday that female guests were being turned away from red-carpet film screenings if they weren’t wearing heels. (It also turns out that red carpet selfies were also banned – a rule my publicist and I broke within just 24 hours of arriving! Oops!)
As much as I love a stiletto (the higher the better in my opinion), I do also think that flats can be equally as glam when styled right as Alexa Chung has proved us time and time again.
But whatever your view on ‘flatgate’ there’s no denying that this has been one of the most stylish Cannes Film Festivals to date with the A-listers amping up the fashion stakes to the max.
Some key trends were evident on this year’s red carpet, from bold colours to sheer to cut out. Here are my favourite dresses from the 68th Cannes Film Festival.
Sheer
The stars dared to bare in gorgeous sheer numbers. A VPL has never been so stylish…
Naomi Watts in an incredible Altuzarra dress with Bulgari jewels
I love this futuristic take on red carpet glamour. Liya Kebede shone in this sequinned sheer cut out dress from Proenza Schouler’s fall 2015 collection
I’m green with envy over Poppy Delevingne’s incredible Burberry dress
Bold Colours
This year, the stars j’adored bright colour block dresses and in true Cannes style, it was the bolder the better.
This pleated Gucci number worn by girl of the moment, Lupita Nyong’o is the perfect red carpet dress. Stylishly matched with a deep purple lipstick and super chic embellished updo.
I have a huge gal crush on Miranda Kerr and its easy to why in this gorgeous hot pink Emanuel Ungaro dress. Few people could carry off such a plunging neckline and thigh high split, but Miranda does it with both style and class.
Jane Fonda proving that style has no age limit in this fabulous Atelier Versace gown. If I look that good at 77 I will be one very happy woman indeed!
LBD
A modern classic – but there was certainly nothing ‘safe’ about this year’s little black dresses.
Emma Stone looking incredible in this lace Oscar De Renta lace mini dress. I opted for purple lace myself for one of evenings at the festival.
Natalie Portman looks stunning in this eye catching, sheer Rodarte number
The queen of boho-chic is back! I love Sienna’s Sonya Rykiel dress with incredible floor length cape and star detail. Stars for a star.
Cut Out
Cut out dresses have made a big comeback at this season’s festival.
Zoe Kravitz looks simply stunning in Valentino Couture. The gorgeous cross over cut out detail adds a cool edge to this floaty feminine dress.
Karlie Kloss in Atelier Versace looking divine. Shimmer with silver buckles and a bandeau top make for a futuristic take on red carpet style.
Texture
2D is so last season daaaaaahlings! This year the stars stood out in ruffles, feathers and embellishment.
Naomi Watts owned the red carpet in this feathered gun metal Elie Saab dress.
Julianne Moore looking oh so glam in Armani Prive. Not many could get away with so much detailing from feathers to sequins and jewelled earrings but Julianne does.
Gorgeous Cannes style.
Which is your favourite red carpet trend?
