Sunday lunch at The Broadcaster White City over the Bank Holiday weekend recently brought back memories harking back 2o years at a time I was just embarking on my media career, a uni student, working as a runner and researcher at BBC’s Whity City during the holidays.
It was a pretty wild period working long 12 hour days before partying hard, often at Top of the Pops or any after party/club myself and my fellow work experience pals could find, rubbing shoulders (in awe) with some legendary talent that would make my fellow uni mates gasp with envy about when I’d return to Halls with all the goss.
I even remember stealing BBC headed paper to fax the most sought after nightclubs, restaurants and private members clubs (yes, faxing was a thing then, I’m THAT old) getting my friends and I on all the guestlists with full VIP treatment too. Always the blagger!!!
White City is, of course, now home to ITV and studios I’ve also worked at, more recently, and on camera, appearing on GMB many times over the years as well as This Morning and Lorraine. Happy memories of going live, something I love madly about my career, feeling stimulated and of course welcome and looked after.
It was always the dream to be a TV broadcaster/journalist so to tick that off my varied career to-do list is quite something I suppose. I don’t mean this to be a self congratulatory piece by any means but it’s healthy to reflect on the journey right and Sunday with the brood, made me do just that.
A contemporary pub and dining room, The Broadcaster’s modern British menu and warm peach-hued surroundings made for a family-pleaser of a meal.
Crispy squid/ calamari with fresh chilli for the boys who love bold flavours and a succulent Castlemead roast chicken with caramelised veggies. Peter opted for breaded haddock with triple cooked chips and peas and the boys, chicken and fish goujons respectively from the kids’ menus and a side of creamy cauliflower cheese. Desserts were the bomb with rhubarb tart, orange and almond cake and caramel ice cream, none too sweet, just how I like my sweets.
Upstairs, The Kids Table were on hand to entertain the children in between courses, a super, safe service for kids 3+ where both boys drew, did arts and crafts, played cards and stuck temporary tattoos to their hands.
Xander insisted on wearing this flat cap to lunch. What a character!
