First things first…I need to de-bust this ongoing myth that as soon as you pop out babies you can wave goodbye to your job prospects.
Having a career and motherhood aren’t mutually exclusive, yet before I had my eldest Oliver, I was petrified that having a kid would mean an end to my career as an award-winning film director.
In fact, I experienced the exact opposite. Not only have I managed to maintain my career in the film industry with several exciting projects currently on the go; having children became a catalyst for change as I launched a whole new career as a professional blogger and have even worked as a presenter and model as a result.
And it looks like I’m part of a growing trend! There is now an incredible 1.2 million ‘mumpreneurs’ in the UK as women embrace self-employment and the benefits it entails of flexible hours, generating a good income, savings on childcare, fulfilling personal ambitions and embracing much loved hobbies.
I’ve always loved writing, having written countless numbers of screenplays and also editing a film festival magazine, so becoming a blogger was a natural stepping stone for myself and was well suited to my own creative strengths.
Other more ‘crafty’ mums than myself have turned their hobbies into successful businesses, selling beautiful original hand crafted goods online.
The website All By Mama is a brilliant online marketplace to source and buy all these wonderful products made by mums and I’m excited to announce they are offering one lucky Honest Mum reader the chance to win a £100 voucher to spend on their site (more on that later…).
A totally unique concept, All By Mama brings together a community of creative mums, providing a reliable platform for them to sell their products, such as beautiful gifts, homewares, artwork and children’s clothes, toys or accessories.
One of my favourite and the most successful retailers on All By Mama, is FromLucy and I’m not the only one who loves her work, as she has a whole host of celeb fans including Holly Willoughby, Fearne Cotton, Emma Willis, Colleen Rooney and many more.
Lucy Tapper’s story is inspirational and shows that any mum with creativity and determination can turn their ideas into a successful business. Lucy’s business whilst watching her young children play daily in their greenhouse where she started to develop and create her unique product ideas on her head. With no financial backing, no contacts and nothing but a sketchbook full of ideas, Lucy has gone on to become one of the most creative and talented illustrators & product designers in the UK. Impressive huh?!
One of my favourite products by Lucy is this gorgeous personalised deluxe Russian Doll family personalised print.
These gorgeous illustrations are the perfect family keepsake and something to treasure forever. Each member of the family (even pets if you like!) is beautifully captured as a Russian Doll.
When ordering the print you simply send a description of each member of your family (such as skin tone, hair colour, eye colour etc) for Lucy to recreate and she can even include extra details on the doll’s tummies such as hobbies and interests, or a symbol to represent an occupation. The dolls can also be in a uniform, such as nurse or policeman.
And just look at ours, I adore the attention to detail, the stubble on Peter’s face, my curly mane and how similar the boys look to their illustration- it’s totally captured our little family and hangs pride of place in the lounge.
The prints are priced £45 unframed or £65 with frame. To order your personalised print please click here
