Vicki Psarias/ Vicki Broadbent/ Honest Mum

Hi! I’m Vicki, mum to Oliver, 12,  Xander, 10, and 1 year old Florence. I’m also an award-winning blogger; broadcaster and parenting expert. Before setting up this blog in 2010, I was a TV director, screenwriter and filmmaker making documentaries, drama and commercials.
 
I wrote the bestselling book Mumboss-The Honest Mum’s Guide To Surviving and Thriving at Work and at Home in 2018, with a 2nd edition released in 2020 and the US and Canadian version titled The Working Mom was released in 2021.

Rediscovering Yorkshire and the ever-changing vibrant city of Leeds feels like my full time job at the moment, and to be fair, I’m loving it! ‘Life is a combination of pasta 🍝 and magic 💫’-Federico Fellini. Florence brought the magic 🪄and @giorgiositalianleeds, my Dad’s restaurant brought the pasta ♥️! And it’s always a mouthwatering feast at the finest Italian in town!!! We should know about great Italian food as its in our DNA! So, fun fact, I took a DNA test in 2017 to learn more about my heritage and my ancestry’s as follows 🧬 I’m 30.8 % Greek, 19.9% Italian (this makes sense historically as from 1489 until 1570/1 Cyprus, where my parents were born, was under Venetian rule), 19.1 % Mizrahi Jewish – Iranian/Iraqi, 10.4% Middle Eastern, 8.5% West Asian, 7.7% North African and 3.5% Ashkenazi Jewish. Fascinating huh? Have you ever traced your family lineage? Croissants in the morning followed by collecting sticks and soaking up the sun rays in the park before the wind forced us home. Then boredom. Ennuie. Why don’t parents talk more openly about the monotony of motherhood (and fatherhood)? Probably because we’re shamed into being made to feel we must educate, inform and entertain (incidentally the BBC’s Reithian values) but I’m not Mr Tumble. I’m tired. My toddler is teething. Let’s all be more open. Parenting is often boring. Like life. ‘Life is amazing. And then it's awful. And then it's amazing again. And in between the amazing and awful it's ordinary and mundane and routine. Breathe in the amazing, hold on through the awful, and relax and exhale during the ordinary. That's just living heartbreaking, soul-healing, amazing, awful, ordinary life. And it's breathtakingly beautiful as L.R. Knost wrote. It’s also, some days. Boring. When a baby is born so is a mum, they say, but so When a baby is born so is a mum, they say, but so often we wander around post-partum, sleep-deprived and baby-brained clouded by fog, lost, unsure of who we are, or who we were. A 24/7 carer now. A companion. A confidante. An anchor for all however rocky we might feel internally. However directionless and damaged. Navigating the new me, the dog-tired, don’t recognise my body or mind me, has taken its toll. Trauma. Juggling. Moving cities. Changing our lives. Seeking a support network close to home. I’m slowly coming up for air now my daughter Florence will soon turn 15 months, and in flashes and flashbacks like a movie montage, I’m remembering what I like (witty chick lit, 90s r ‘n’ b, art galleries, the opera, city breaks, library visits, documentaries, Chanel lipstick, American reality TV, cheesy date nights with my husband and Espresso Martinis with my girlfriends) and what I’m good at (a visual eye, a raconteur, an analytical mind) as well as, and outside of, being a mum. I’m divided into three, spread butter thin most days, my time so short and craved-for and yet as my kids sleep, I wish them awake. I miss them. Not every night but many. This is the parenting paradox. I might be an experienced mum having had babies in my 20s, 30s and 40s but I often feel I’m failing. That I’m drowning head downin to-do lists, floundering under the mental load, the washing loads, the workloads…While the unconditional, often overwhelming and touched-out, can’t live without all-consuming honey-scented love of my kids will see me through, this job is hard for all. No parent has it easy. However pretty their Reels are, their highlights and best bits seem. After I poured this cup of tea, I took a deep breath in for 7, held it for 5, then out for 5. I’m taking my chaotic life one day and one breath at a time.

#AD Ever feel like despite your best intentions, #AD Ever feel like despite your best intentions, you get to the end of the week and have wasted food. We're making a conscious effort here as a family to change this, for our planet and our purse. Jacob’s Crackers @jacobsofficialuk have challenged me to make the most of what I already have in my fridge and pantry using up leftovers to make something yummy. With just 3 ingredients, I made this quick and easy tzatziki dip (cucumber and yoghurt dip) to make a filling snack on store cupboard staple: delicious Jacob's Crackers. Ingredients: 4 tablespoons of yoghurt (I used Greek Yoghurt but any works) 1/2 a cucumber, diced 2 tablespoons of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Method: Pour the yoghurt into a small bowl. Add the cucumber and drizzle with the olive oil. Stir well. Dollop onto crackers. Makes 8 crackers. 4 shown.
