After a long period of homeschooling my sons, Oliver and Alexander, 11 and 8, during the pandemic, I jumped at the chance to work with GoStudent to help my son Alexander in particular, with some extra tuition online.
Oliver took to learning from home like a duck to water but Xander struggled with being away from school so it’s been hugely useful to work with GoStudent to help him feel more confident about learning, especially now he’s returned back to school for a new term.
GoStudent kindly also offered me a French lesson as I’d taken up languages again during the pandemic, in the time I’d saved commuting. Along with painting, I’ve spent the past 18 months cementing both French and Greek and feel happy to have started them up again. Previously fluent in Greek, I’d forgotten a fair bit due to lack of practise and while French was a subject which came easy to me at school, it wasn’t something I’d spent much time on until the pandemic hit.
With a part French husband and children keen on learning both French and Greek, I thought it was time to get back to languages and 18 months later, I’ve made some real progress.
I did however feel less confident in French so was excited for a conversational tutoring session with Anna, one of GoStudent’s tutors. Anna was able to test me on what I know already whilst teaching me some valuable lessons on grammar, an area I often stumble on.
It was fun to be challenged in conversational French with Anna. I loved listening to her speak about her life in Belgium and her studies (she’s also learning Chinese and Russian) and I found her study tips incredibly useful. Anna advised I listen to French radio in the car and to continue watching French TV programmes with English subtitles, in order to help me revise. She also mentioned stints in France would help me too as nothing beats spending time or living in a country you’re learning the language of.
Pre-pandemic we would visit the South of France several times a year (Nice and Grasse are cities I’ve been holidaying in since I was a baby) so I look forward to returning to the French Riviera more often in the future (and with a new baby in tow) so I can put my newly learnt French to good use!
When it came to Alexander’s session, he was pumped for a physics lesson focusing on space, a passion of his, which whilst not on the curriculum, offered a stimulating first session with tutor Nurina who included planetary slide shows, fun fact files and as a quiz at the end.
Both sessions were easy to log onto (with links sent ahead of time to your email account as well as a reminder before the session) and they provided us both with a one-to-one 50 minute session via video.
You would have an account with them and access the lesson through their Webapp.
So, who exactly are GoStudent?
GoStudent offer personalised, one-to-one tutoring online, providing you with:
- The best tutors on the market, meticulously selected based on your child’s (or your own!) needs.
- All tutors are assessed internally on their subject knowledge through tests and an interview evaluating their teaching skills. In the UK all new tutors are subject to an enhanced DBS check.
- They provide a lot of flexibility when it comes to study hours and subjects. The membership is available for the whole family and includes access to all subjects with different tutors if needed at no extra cost.
- You get access to their online learning platform where you can schedule in your lessons and track your child’s progress.
- You will receive support from their dedicated customer service team and their customer care line is available to message 7 days a week to answer any questions you may have.
Regarding pricing, their packages are available immediately upon purchase and will be debited on a monthly basis. The payments are spread out over a time period of your choosing depending on your/ your child’s goals. The pricing remains consistent across all tutors and subjects with prices ranging between £19.20 – £29.60 per session depending on the length of the membership and the number of lessons per month.
The session credits can then be put toward the subjects in which you/your child requires tuition, and once bought they are available for use immediately.
If you want extra help in a subject, depending on the tutor’s availability, you can swap and put the session credit towards that subject. GoStudent currently offer 20+ subjects and this number is growing so your credits can be used in any subject with any tutor meaning their platform can cater for the educational needs of the whole family.
Memberships can also be paused so students can take a break from tutoring too.
