Tips for a successful family trip
● Choose a rental car wisely
Everything will depend on the vehicle you choose for the trip once you arrive at your destination. Be it a passenger car, converted van or camper: every option has its advantages. Ideally, opt for a spacious, comfortable car for long-distance trips if you’re travelling around so you have ample space for luggage storage and sleeping. Check online for prices and any additional services. The initial deposit or added fees for a late return for example should be stated on the website and in promotional material. Don’t forget to inspect the car before signing off on its technical description, and do report any issues you discover such as scratches, bumps, damaged tires, missing spare wheels or a faulty air conditioner for example.
● Prepare the route
After renting a car, assessing your route is important as is working out what you want to see and do on your adventure. Make a list of any interest points such as national parks, cities, etc. and keep a contingency plan in mind, in case of fatigue, adverse weather, and in case you change your mind!
● Measure distances carefully
Be realistic when it comes to planning car journeys. It’s better to plan a maximum of 100-150 km per day if you have kids with you. Prioritise quality over quantity and leave time to walk and discover at points of interest.
The below suggestions will help keep kids entertained on long journeys:
❖ Books and comics.
❖ Coloring books and small toys.
❖ Card games, small board games.
❖ Playlists of songs to sing.
❖ Podcasts for children.
❖ Tablets and video games for older children.
Alternate moments of activity with a chance to look out of the window and take in the view.
