My Mumboss life is a busy one as I raise kids and run a business. I spend a day or two in London most weeks and whilst I work flexibly around my family, life is full. Just how I like it. I’ve received a fair few emails recently about my style, how I go from school runs to shoots, meets and ‘eats’ so I thought I’d dedicate a post to the pieces on my must-have mumboss style list.
As I work from home, I’ll be honest, I can and sometimes do, spend all day in good intention gym kit (often discovering I’ve not managed the run that I’d hoped for, by the end of the day) but I’ve started making more of an effort recently and the results have been a little bit awesome.
Making more of an effort style-wise in the day has set the tone for me whether I work from home or not, my work uniform has made me more productive and also saves me time as I don’t have to swiftly change if a last minute Google Hangout with a client comes in.
When it comes to my school gate style, you’ll mostly find me in comfy clothes (if I had the guts to wear my Primarni onesie at the gates, I would believe me). My husband mostly does the drop-off in the am (thankfully) so I can make early morning deadlines and I do the pick-up at the end of the day.
When it comes to the school run am or pm – which is akin to military operation in our house – we’ve learnt the hard way that preparation is everything! I lay out Oliver’s clothes the night before, and sometimes my own depending on my schedule. If I’m in London for a meeting or shoot, I love a tea dress, fitted jumper or flattering blouse with skinny jeans.
Comfort is key for we busy mamas and while I love the idea of rocking up to the gates or to my meets in 4 inch Louboutins a la Victoria Beckham (bahaha); in practice I’m all about the Converse All Stars or Chelsea Boots.
However, comfort in no way means a sacrifice of style and while I don’t want look like I’m attending Paris Fashion Week in my day to day Mumboss life (unless I’m actually attending PFW), it’s important that what I wear reflects my personality and unique sense of style: think bold colours mixed with classic chic styles as below.
Here, I share my latest favourite mumboss pieces for the season below.
I’d love to read about your own style in the comments too, so we can inspire one another so do share!
Here are my picks:
Double Face Oval Coat, Jigsaw – £259
A long winter coat can hide a multitude of sins aka eating all the cake at Christmas. Red is one of my favourite colours and I LOVE this show-stopping red oval coat by Jigsaw. Pair with an all black outfit or jeans/Breton striped top combo for a Continental-chic look.
Jersey dress, H&M, £19.99
I could wear Breton stripes all day, every day. It’s one of my signatures looks, stemmed from my love for all things Parisian. Team with a biker jacket and black leather boots for a school (of rock) run look that would make Kate Moss proud.
MOTO Midnight Raw Hem Jamie Jeans, Topshop, £42
I’ve been obsessed with Topshop’s Jamie Jeans for as long as I can remember. Comfy, stylish and flattering, they’re my go-to jeans for every day. I love the new raw hem version which skim the ankle for a cute look, especially when paired with crisp white pumps.
Lofty Animal Print Funnel Neck Jumper, Topshop, £34
Unleash your wild side with this stunning animal print jumper from Topshop. The funnel neck is one of the season’s key trends ensuring you look suitably stylish. Mum-uniform has never been more wild 😉
Boxy Cotton Shirt, Warehouse, £32
A crisp white shirt is the pinnacle of chic style. I love the contemporary boxy cut of this warehouse shirt which looks perfect with skinny jeans and a statement necklace. Word of advice though, leave putting on the shirt until both kids have eaten their breakfast. I’ve been there, done that and bought the stain remover to show for it 🙁
Puma Basket Classic White, Office, £54.99
Earn instant cool with these on-point Puma Basket Classic Whites. Puma is having a moment in the world of streetwear right now with celeb fans that include Rhianna and Kylie Jenner and if it’s good enough for rhi rhi it’s good enough for me, me!
Neon Knit, & Other Stories, £55
Add a pop of colour to your morning wardrobe with this neon knit by fashionista’s fave, & Other Stories. Pair with leather leggings and pumps for a modern, casual style that you can sharpen up with heels for a business meeting.
Sasha Print Dress, Precis, £99
This floral print dress is perfect for taking you from desk to cocktails dusk. Perfect for the office or a day of meetings, it can also be dressed up with heels and jewellery to take you through that evening’s soiree. Eagle-eyed Good Morning Britain viewers will also have seen the gorgeous Susanna Reid wearing this exact dress – so you’re in stylish company!
