Ask (!) the kids what their favourite thing to bake is and they’ll tell you without hesitation, ‘making pizza’ wins and over cakes and biscuits too and that’s despite them only ever doing it twice in their little lives.
That’s how memorable and fun making Italian most famous export is!It was lucky then that we were invited to a special ASK Italian Mother’s Day pizza workshop with culinary genius and hugely charismatic TV Chef and Restaurateur Theo Randall at the stylish ASK in Paddington on Spring Street.
A blogger’s dream of a venue, and a taste of things to come across all the ASKs in the UK with a light-catching conservatory, yellow mimosas adorning the tables and walls, low hanging lights and glossy reflective green tiles, you won’t be disappointed in the decor or the food there.
It was wonderful to hang out with Mandy and Eilidh from Sneaky Veg and Mummy and Monkeys and their families too.
…The mimosas were a thoughtful touch as the story goes that the act of giving out mimosa flowers began in Rome on March 8 1946 at the end of World War II as men gave the fragrant flowers to their wives, mothers, sisters and daughters as a sign of appreciation.
Now, on IWD, Italian women hand the flowers to other women as a sign of solidarity.
The Mothers’ Day menu for mammas is just as considered with a rainbow salad of candy stripe beetroot, yellow courgettes, Santos tomatoes, cucumber, red pepper, mixed leaves, radish and pine nuts with dressing followed by Prima Light Coppa Ham and Egg pizza we had a chance to recreate for ourselves, with the entire dishes totalling under 550 calories no less! They also have wonderful gluten-free and vegan menus too!
I love that ASK use semolina to make the base crispy as they do in Italy and the Pomodoro sauce is sauced (get it #soz) from brothers Giorgio and Gilberto Greci in Emilia, Romagna who have been canning tomatoes since the 1900s so it’s authentic and delicious food at its best.
The children gobbled up their handmade stone-baked pizzas and Oliver ate a whopping three, and this is the fussy one at that!
I created a heart shaped gluten-free pizza with a Greek twist (obvs) and the kids enjoyed crispy calamari, stuffed mushrooms, butterfly prawns and creamy burrata from the ala carte menu (scroll down for the mouthwatering pics).
Authentic, seasonal and delicious, ASK have got it spot on with all of their menus: the kids one is dynamic, varied and interactive too encouraging they get stuck in with their hands, and the Mothers’ Day 3 course menu with prosecco for just £19.95 is great value without any compromise on taste and portion size!
Here are the promised dishes from the ala carte menu too!
…For dessert Peter plumped for the Blood Orange Chocolate Tart which is served with tangy raspberry sorbet and we oohed and aaghed at the Chocolate Etna, where hot toffee sauce is poured over the dark chocolate cup at your table, revealing a hidden scoop of vanilla gelato on top of a hot chocolate fondant. It will blow your mind!
The kids relished ice cream and biscuits, revelling in the hundreds and thousands and sweet raspberry sauce!
What a wonderful way to while away a Saturday. Great company, scrumptious food and two very happy little chefs who took pride in their creations!
As well as being for a chance to win a family meal thanks to ASK (you just need to tag them and #TakeYourMammaOut in a photo uploaded of your coloured in Mother’s Day cards you can collect in the restaurant, to be in with a chance).
I’ve since become vegan and can’t wait to try the vegan menu.
