Being a mum can be isolating experience.

This feeling of loneliness is something I experienced myself, following the traumatic birth of my eldest son, Oliver.

I felt incredibly alone, which was only exemplified when my husband Peter returned to work after his 2 week paternity leave.

The youngest of my friends to have a baby, leaving an insecure directing career to one side, I was literally left holding the baby during maternity leave.

It was setting up this blog and making great blogging friends and collaborators which led to me feeling stronger and happier as a new mum.

Whether you have a traumatic birth or not, having a child and a first baby in particular is a massive shock to the system, which is why having a supportive network you trust is essential, and Kensington Mums are just that. So much so, I’m sad I no longer live in London.

Founded in 2011 by the uber glamorous Dina Maktabi, Kensington Mums is all about empowering mamas by bringing them together to share experiences, learn from one another, have fun, and of course feel welcome and supported.

A free-to-join network group, Kensington Mums has an online magazine site that ‘keeps you in the loop of the local scoop’ and features all the places to go as a family, the perfect shops for mum and baby, and things to do in and around West London. Kensington Mums welcomes ALL mums and not just the ones in Kensington and Chelsea.

It is also bursting with recipes, swanky competitions and reviews to empower you in your choices in and around the area.

The site literally includes everything mums need to know, from schools to parks, playgrounds and local hospitals in London- making it the perfect resource for families living or moving into the area and particularly expats, new to West London.

Kensington Mums also hosts regular events and meetups from coffee mornings, pamper evenings to inspiring, speaker led-events too and they welcome ALL mums, not just the ones in Kensington and Chelsea.

Describing her motivation behind the site, founder Dina says,

‘I created Kensington Mums with the aim of helping my local community of Mums to connect and share knowledge and experiences with one another. At first, it started off mainly being my close friends, but after having my second baby, the idea of having a bigger network support came to mind and in a sense created a passion in me to help mums outside my group of friends’.

‘Being a mum is definitely the hardest job in the world and it’s vital that mums have support and know they are not alone. We support mums in their journey through motherhood, sharing tips, swapping advice and offering one another inspiration and motivation to make our motherhood journey a memorable one. We welcome all Mums to join our ‘mumthly’ events and coffee meet up.’

Nathalie Bernadotte, a mum of two joined the Kensington Mums team in 2014 as partner and events manager and told me, ‘Kensington Mums really helped me during my final months of pregnancy and first months of becoming a mother’.

‘Not having family close by and being the first to have a baby within my close cycle of friends, I often didn’t know who to talk to about my labour and birth fears or who to ask advice and share tips on breastfeeding, burps and naps. Going to the ‘mumthly’ meet-ups gave me more confidence as a mum and made me find many new mummy friends who shared my same situation’.

‘When the opportunity to team up with Dina came in 2014, I didn’t think twice. I wanted to be part of that community that once helped me so much, while getting to know more about a business focused on mums and children. What I do, gives me immense joy and being able to work around my son and take him ‘into work’ too is wonderful’.
