Monster Doughnuts

Interview with Children’s Author Gianna Pollero

Gianna is the author of the funny, adventure-filled Monster Doughnuts series for children aged 7-10. The first book in the series was published in April 2021 and the second, Cyclops on a Mission, came out in January 2022. The third book will land in bookshops in July 2022. She is currently working on a number of new projects.

Gianna was born and raised in Kent but also spent a considerable amount of her childhood in northern Italy, where the majority of her family live.

She originally trained as a journalist but has spent the last twenty (plus) years working in communications roles for a number of public sector organisations.

When not probing her children for book ideas, Gianna enjoys photography, cooking, gardening and spending time with family and friends.

Describe a typical day for you?

I’m up early to get the children to school. Then I go to work – I work full-time for a trust of schools in Kent as well as being an author, at the moment. Sometimes, I squeeze in an author visit at a school during the day, too.

Once home, I usually go for a run before doing all the evening jobs – making dinner, tidying up, lunches for the following day – and then I try to fit in a couple of hours of writing before I go to bed! I also try and see my friends at least once a week. It’s busy!

What do you feel are your greatest achievements?

My son and daughter are undoubtedly my greatest achievements, followed by my books – the Monster Doughnuts series (broadly for children aged 7-10). I have always dreamed of being a children’s author so to realise that dream has been absolutely phenomenal. I will never take it for granted and I don’t think it will ever quite sink in!

What’s in your handbag/ satchel?

Eyeliner! Without it, people either think I’m ill or tired! There’s usually always a list too (shopping, to-do, birthdays…) – I generally have at least three or four on the go at any one time.

What are your ambitions in life?

Primarily, for me and my children to be happy. But also to carve out a full-time career in writing so I can immerse myself in doing what I love the most.

I’d also like to have more time to do some good – raise money for charity, plant some trees, rescue more animals…

What do you wish you’d known at the start of your career you now know?

I wish I’d known just how amazing it would feel to achieve something that means so much to you – I’d have tried even harder!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

I really hope I’ll have written several more books, had them published, and will be in a position to be an author full-time. I want my kids to see that if you work hard you can make anything happen.

What advice would you give a budding children’s author?

Be persistent and believe in yourself! It can be a tough business so don’t let rejections faze you. Keep going, learn from the feedback you’re given and, most importantly, keep reading and writing. By reading, you get to know the market and you can see what has worked for others. That then transfers to your own writing – and the more you do it, like anything, the better you become.

What advice would you give to a new parent?

Be kind to yourself and take a breath to enjoy the new experience. It can be really daunting and there are some days that are far more difficult than others but try to take the time to cherish every moment as your baby will soon be a toddler and your toddler will soon be an infant… and then, before you know it you’ll have a teenager on your hands!

Don’t be scared to ask for help – every new parent needs another pair of hands from time to time, so if you have that support network around you, use it. And remember, there’s no guidebook so we can only do the best and use our parental instincts, which should always be trusted.

Finally, happiness is…

My kids, my family and my friends. When you have the right people around you, everything is that little bit easier.
