Welcome to the latest Wonderful Women!

This week, I’m speaking to Zanna Van Dijk whom I had the pleasure of speaking with about our careers at an incredible workshop with Red Magazine on how to Jump Start Your Career In Tech!

Zanna is a fellow professional blogger and all-round inspiring and wonderful human being, and it’s an honour to interview her for my series!

Aged just 24, she is the founder of the popular fitness, lifetsyle and travel blog, Zanna Van Dijk and has amassed an incredible 130k Instagram followers along the way. Pretty amazing huh?

Through her blogging, Zanna has worked with top brands such as Adidas, Microsoft, Tommy Hilfiger and more.

Zanna is also a personal trainer and fitness model, walking the catwalk at LFW and she’s also the face of Tommy Hilfiger’s sports capsule collection.

Over to Zanna…

Describe a typical day for you?

Honestly it varies every single day! Most days I wake up at 5am, whether thats to train personal training clients, to workout myself, or to just crack on with some laptop time. I am definitely a morning person.

In terms of what happens during the actual day, it can be anything from glamourous photoshoots and filming youtube videos to speaking at events, training my clients, writing pieces for magazines, travelling to far-flung places to create travel content, or running my events company #girlgains. In reality though, an awful lot of my time is spent sitting at home in my dressing gown and slippers writing blog posts!

Evenings are usually spent at events, training, or working at my laptop. I try and keep one day a week and one evening a week free though!

What do you feel are your biggest achievements?

It is tough to reel off your achievements while maintaining a modest appearance!! I have to admit I am very proud of myself for writing my book Strong, as it was a long and challenging process; as well as being on the cover of the Sunday times Style, Womens fitness & Healthy magazines! I would never have dreamt I would be in a magazine, let alone on the front of one.

What’s in your handbag/ satchel?

Let me reel off the list!

My laptop and charger, which go everywhere with me. Lip balm. House keys. A handwritten diary and a pen – I am very traditional. A water bottle. A hair brush. My purse. Oh and snacks… definitely snacks! Usually in the form of a sachet of nut butter, because my addition to nuts is real.

What are your ambitions in life?

To build an empire and take over the world!!

In all seriousness though, one of my biggest ambitions was employing someone which I was just recently was able to do! Yay! Now, my goals for the future are mainly to keep being my own boss, maintain an income through doing something I love, experience different cultures and to keep my friends, family and boyfriend close at hand.

What do you wish you’d known at the start of your career you now know?

My worth! As a blogger, in the beginning it is super hard to know your worth. Especially as this industry is developing and growing so quickly; and brands are realising the value of bloggers more and more. I spent a long time undervaluing what I do

I also wish I had known more about tech, cameras and all that business in the beginning. I spent countless hours trying to work out what on earth an aperture is.

Where do you see yourself in 5 yearstime?

Ok so I will be 29… hmmm. 5 years isn’t very long, but an awful lot can happen!

In terms of business, I would love to have a larger team around me and perhaps be working from an office space, rather than my kitchen table! I would love my book to have been a success. I would love to have traveled the world even more, and visited my dream destination… the Galapagos! Of course I would love for the blog to grow and develop, and to work with even bigger and better brands into the future.

What advice would you give a budding Fitness Trainer/ Blogger?

Create content which you’re passionate about and which you would want to read. You’re going to have to make an awful lot of content if you stick with it, so make sure you’re really truly interested in what you’re talking about!

Go across multiple platforms, don’t just stick to one. If you’re wanting to make this into a career, you need to offer brands more than just an instagram post. I often find that brands want me to create youtube videos, blog posts, tweets, face books, snapchats AND instagrams! So I make sure I can offer them that.

Network. Be a nice person. Make a good impression. Be a pleasure to work with. We are all human. If you meet someone who can make a difference to your career, they will often be more than happy to help you if you’re genuinely lovely. Be willing to help others, and they will be willing to help you.

Finally, happiness is…

A mindset. I used to have a negative mindset until I decided that I wanted to be happier. I truly believe that you can manipulate the way you think and become a more positive person! Choose to be happy 🙂

I’m amazed by her drive and her achievements already at such a young age. It does speak to the incredible platform offered by blogging, vlogging and the digital era, that young women can literally grab life by the cojones and make it work for them. Good on you Zanna! Also like your traditional pen and diary in the bag, I’m a stickler for writing things down by hand too, much as I love my old i-gadgets 🙂
