Choosing The Right Wooden Flooring For Your Next Project

When it comes to flooring options, nothing beats the timeless appeal and natural warmth of wooden floors in my opinion. From classic solid wood to the new engineered wood flooring, there’s a flooring option to suit every taste and budget.

Since purchasing our new (forever) home in Harrogate recently (yay), I’ve been researching everything from flooring to paint and wallpaper for the new house. I have some time to go as the builders have started work but we’ll hopefully be in within two months and then the fun begins!

Below, I’m sharing tips I’ve picked up from my extensive research on and offline I thought might be useful to you as choosing flooring can be pretty mind-boggling as there’s just so much info and choice out there.

You want to choose a flooring option that not only looks chic and beautiful but is also durable, easy to maintain, and fits your budget.

My tips will hopefully help you make an informed decision and ensure your wooden floors are both a stylish and also a practical addition to your space. So, let’s dive in and explore the world of wooden flooring! I warned you all recently that I’ll be cheating on fashion with furniture so this is just the start…

Types Of Wood

The type of wood you want should be one of your first considerations when laying a wooden floor. The appearance and longevity of your floor can be affected by the type of wood used, and not all woods are made equal. Oak is one of the most popular choices for wooden flooring and for good reason. It’s a durable and hard-wearing wood that comes in a range of colours and finishes. It’s also relatively affordable compared to other hardwoods.

Teak is another popular choice, thanks to its natural water resistance and durability. However, it’s on the pricier side.

Mahogany is a rich, reddish-brown wood that’s known for its enchanting grain patterns. It’s also pretty durable and resistant to scratches.

Ash is a light-coloured wood that’s often used for contemporary or minimalist designs. It’s not as hard- wearing as oak or teak but it’s still a good choice, especially for low-traffic areas.

When choosing the type of wood for your flooring, consider factors such as the amount of foot traffic in the room (a lot when it comes to family homes), the overall design of the space, and your budget. Remember that different woods will have different levels of durability, so choose accordingly to get your money’s worth!

Types Of Finish

The finish of your wooden flooring is another important consideration. There are several types of finishes, each with its unique look and benefits.

Brushed finishes are popular for creating a rustic or distressed look where the surface of the wood is textured to create a worn appearance.

Oiled finishes are a popular choice for creating a natural, matte finish. They’re also easy to maintain and repair.

Lacquered finishes are more durable and glossy than oiled ones but require more maintenance. They’re a good choice for high-traffic areas however. Unfinished flooring allows you to customise the finish to your liking. However, it requires more work to install and finish.

Bear in mind the look you want but also the maintenance requirements when choosing a finish for your wooden flooring. Time equals money right?!

Engineered Vs. Solid Wood Flooring

Another consideration when choosing wooden flooring is whether to use engineered or solid wood flooring. Hard and long-lasting, solid wood flooring is crafted from a single piece of wood. However, it’s also more expensive and more difficult to install.

Engineered wood flooring is made from multiple layers of wood and is designed to be more stable than solid wood flooring. It’s also more affordable and easier to install. However, it’s not as durable as solid wood flooring and can’t be refinished as many times.
There’s always a compromise somewhere!

Plank Width

The width of the planks in your wooden flooring can also impact the overall look of the space.

Narrow planks are a good choice for creating a traditional or classic look. They’re also more affordable than wider planks. Standard-width planks are a good choice for creating a timeless look that will never go out of style.

Wide planks are a popular choice for creating a modern or contemporary look. They’re also an excellent choice if you want to make a small room appear larger. Top tip!

Installing The Flooring Yourself Or Hiring Flooring Fitters

Installing wooden flooring can be a DIY project, but it’s also a job best left to professionals. If you’re experienced in DIY projects and have the necessary tools, you may be able to install the flooring yourself, however, hiring professional flooring fitters is best if you’re unsure, inexperienced or lack the neccessary tools.

Professional flooring fitters UK have the necessary experience and tools to ensure that your wooden flooring is installed correctly. They can also provide advice on the best type of wooden flooring for your space and budget.  Consider your DIY skills and budget when deciding whether to install the flooring yourself or hire professional flooring fitters near you to ensure the job is done to the highest standard.

Other Factors To Consider

When choosing wooden flooring for your project, several other factors must be considered. The look of the flooring is an important consideration. Do you want a light or dark finish? A traditional or modern look? The colour and pattern of the flooring can also impact the overall look of the space. Flooring should compliment the other design elements in the room.

I hope these tips helped. Do you have wooden floors in your home?
