A Family Guide to Glasgow With TransPennine Express

Honest Mum

Welcome to post two of our month-long trip around the North with TransPennine Express.

Catch our trip to York HERE.

At the start of the tour, I asked my followers on social media for their recommendations across York, Glasgow, Newcastle and Manchester and we visited the places they suggested. Thanks you fabulous lot!

After family-fun in York on our first stop, we headed up to Glasgow, a city we’d not visited before which exceeded all of our expectations. Often overshadowed by its big sister Edinburgh, this absolute gem of a city offers scenic views, delicious food, friendly people at every turn, and museums which were (literally) out of this world!

Compact, dynamic and serene, we fell in love with Glasgow!

Below, I give you the lowdown on what to do when visiting with kids, and most importantly where to eat!

What to do:

The Glasgow Science Centre is a just short drive from the centre and truly dazzled us with what was on offer there.

First stop was food as we arrived starving with the on-site cafe offering varied and delicious food (with gluten-free options too).

The Planetarium show in their dome shaped theatre taught me more about the solar system in one hour than I’ve grasped in my entire life! It was epic!

With crafting activities, interactive exhibits and optical illusions that made us keel over in laughter, you must MUST make a visit to the Glasgow Science Centre.

The Riverside Museum is another unmissable museum for all the family: home to some of the world’s finest cars, motorbikes, ships and trams with a ship on site the kids can explore to get a real feel for life on deck, this place brought Glasgow, and its rich history to life.

For my shopping fix, I hit the famous Buchanan Street for my usual high street faves and some quintessentially Glaswegian independents too stocking up on tartan, tweed, homeware and sweet treats.

What to eat:

For delicious American cuisine and fabulous Freakshakes you’ll be dreaming about forever, head to Steak Cattle and Roll.

The nachos were the best we’d ever eaten (and I can safely say that eaten tons, that’s for sure).

Smoke BBQ got this family’s thumbs up too, with this unique concept restaurant transforming the standard BBQ in your garden to a super smokin’ (in every sense of the word) makeover destination. I loved the industrial style chic interior and literally could not stop photographing the place!

The burgers are EVERYTHING by the way.

Before we left the city we headed to The Lighthouse/Mackintosh Centre so Peter could snap panoramic views of Glasgow from the top (thanks to a follower on FB for the suggestion)…
