Originally from Yorkshire too, we connected over our love of hair and all things Harrods. It’s always been my most favourite London store and I have the sweetest memories of visiting Toy Kingdom as a child-and now love taking my own children there.
And don’t get me started on the fashion…I could basically move into womenswear.
I didn’t however, realise there was a salon in Harrods? Where have I been?!
The charming Andrew put that right, kindly invited me into the Urban Retreat during our chat, promising me a beautiful blow dry- and his team certainly didn’t disappoint!
Dashing to Harrods in the rain (why does it always rain when I’m about to have my hair done!
Here I am, hair up, ready for the magic to commence!
Also, how glamorous is my Mum’s 1950’s vintage coat?! I can’t even…
…So from the moment you enter the Urban Retreat, on the top floor (5th) of Harrods, you find yourself transported to the ultimate hair and beauty haven.
…And another selfie for good measure. #Bloggerface on and (half) smile in action-
Where is my usual Paparazzo in husband Peter when you need him hey?! Selfishly working, that’s where 😉
Once inside, you check in at reception and take a seat on the sumptuous leather couches by the front desk. It’s all luxuriously dreamy yet not in the least pretentious. What’s not to love?!
I was quickly greeted by my charismatic stylist, Ali, who immediately informed me he simply loved my long hair and wanted to give me, ‘a big, bouncy blow dry’-in keeping with Urban Retreats’ illustrious front cover style hair-and my signature look of course! Yay!
I explained I’m allergic to Kerastase so he used the Rahua haircare range-all natural, rainforest grown products that smelt utterly delicious. Edible almost- and my hair smelt that good, days later, too!
…After the initial hair consultation, I was led to the low lit, back area of the salon (I love that the salon was divided into specific areas so you don’t hear hair dryers while having your hair washed for example)-and there I set to having my locks shampooed and conditioned.
It was the first time I’d ever had my feet propped up during a hair wash too. I’m not sure I can ever have my hair washed without one, again, now.
First word: divine. Second word: spoilt. Love it!
A thorough but relaxing hair wash later, and conditioner was applied only to the ends of my hair. Ali advised conditioner can create a greasy scalp even with dry hair.
I literally learn something new every day in this blogging job of mine.
With a warm towel wrapped around my head, I was led back to the main room to let the styling commence-
With the man who can, the super-talented Ali!
My hair has never felt smoother or silkier.
I was offered a cocktail during the styling, but as it was a working day for me, I opted for fresh mint tea (all served in Harrods’ eponymous teapot, cup and saucer) and a healthy seeded biscuit on the side.
A refreshing finish to a simply stunning and restorative hair appointment.
And let’s just appreciate the festive decor too shall we-what a darling wreath.
I glided out of Harrods with my beautiful big blow dry bouncing in the breeze and made my way to the British Library, where I was speaking on a panel there.
My hair definitely gave me the confidence I needed to deliver a hopefully, impassioned speech.
I was touched by the feedback on my words, and also on my hair.
It’s remarkable how hair and beauty can create such a boost.
Thank you Ali, and thank you Harrods for such a fabulous blow dry.
I shall be back!
