Learn how to share your planning efforts with other families and get inspired with seasonal ideas for food and activities. Together, you’ll create an unforgettable experience for the entire neighborhood.
1. Plan Your Block Party in Advance
Start planning your block party at the beginning of summer, when themed decorations and materials are still available. Now is also an excellent time to set aside family outfits, like festive swimsuits or kids’ dresses. A cute tropical sundress or a red, white and blue romper makes the perfect party ensemble! Decide whether you’ll order food or have a potluck. Then, spend some time browsing local vendors and catering lists. Give your neighbors time to plan their attendance and help with activities. If you live in a homeowners’ association, consider contacting the board for guidance on where and how you can set up your party. Next, decide if you should call your municipality. Some neighborhoods need permits for parking or renting community centers.
2. Create a Party Planning Committee
Hosts organize the event and manage the overall budget but shouldn’t feel responsible for paying all the costs. A celebration committee can help create a financial plan and spread responsibilities throughout the neighborhood. Assign a volunteer to handle essential areas like food, invitations or activities. Then, check in with your committee leaders to ensure all vendors are on schedule. You’ll
serve as the point of contact for questions, but you can also help a committee leader if they need to change plans.
3. Send Party Invitations
How will you send your block party invitations? Check with your community for a digital address book or email list. Choose from a printed postcard invitation or an e-invite. Include the date, time and meeting location. Then, describe your activities! Let attendees know whether they should bring chairs, towels or snacks. If there are water activities, remind your neighbors to bring swimwear or a dry change of clothes. Finally, provide a deadline for RSVPs. Give guests a few weeks to add it to their calendar or change plans.
4. Schedule Entertainment and Activities
An end-of-summer block party is a celebration! Work with your planning committees to create exciting activities for all ages. Offer entertainment, like live music or a soundtrack full of uplifting, high-energy tunes. Ask neighbors to loan their musical experience or Bluetooth speakers so everyone can join the fun. Play fun summer games like tag or tug of war. Then, cool off with sprinklers or a bounce
house with a waterslide. Your community’s budget will help you decide what to offer. Some neighborhoods pitch in for fireworks or a musician, while others schedule a game of community karaoke or flag football. Decide on your community’s personality and create a schedule that lets everyone come together.
5. Order Food and Drink
Potlucks are perfect for block parties. Create a community sign-up list so neighbors can bring drinks, fresh fruit or chips. Grill as a neighborhood or assign barbecue items to the best chefs. Some communities will have a potluck theme, like favorite summer dishes or
vegetarian delights.
Another idea is to gather donations for a food and drink order. Subs and pizzas are usually well-received at a summer party, but you may also want pastries and coffee for a brunch party. Don’t forget about party essentials like water and side dishes. Ask other neighbors to bring plates and cups if you have the food and drinks covered.
6. Embrace a Summer Party Theme
A party theme will spark the imagination and tell your neighbors what to expect. Create entertaining photo opportunities for families with a summertime concept. There’s nothing cuter than your community’s little ones in denim overalls and sweet baby girl dresses! Have a contest for the most adorable family matching outfits or summer getups!
Themes can guide your playlist or help you plan snacks. Hold an ice cream social with a food truck and dessert-themed party games. Or make it a summer luau with a cookout and plenty of flower leis. Does your community love to play sports or spend time with their pets? Hold a summer Olympics or pet parade. An outdoor movie night is a relaxing way to hold a summer block party without spending too much on food or activities. Rent a popcorn machine and invite guests to bring their favorite drinks and snacks. Whatever theme you choose, you’ll create a lively atmosphere and ensure plenty of special memories.
7. Create a Neighborhood Safety Plan
Block parties should be fun and safe. Decide as a group how you’ll respond to an emergency. Have a first aid kit and fire extinguisher on site. Remind parents to keep their eyes on children and provide a way to alert a host or committee member.
8. Make Eco-Friendly Choices
After the party, leave the neighborhood clean and tidy. Have plenty of trash cans on-site during the event and ensure enough garbage bags are available to pick up loose trash. A pack of disposable gloves will help to make cleanup more sanitary. A setup and cleanup committee can ensure the community responsibly disposes of cups and plates. Think twice about using disposable water balloons and other toys that can leave trash in the street or grass. Use eco-friendly dishes and utensils wherever possible.
Being environmentally conscious can even extend to your clothing! Choose summer outfits made with eco-friendly materials that you can wear beyond the season. Materials like bamboo viscose are soft and seasonless, keeping everyone in the family comfortable and stylish no matter the party theme.
End Summer with an Unforgettable Neighborhood Block Party
A block party is a community bonding experience. Get inspired early in the season to create a unique bash! Consider your neighborhood and what brings you together. Then, showcase your community’s personality.
Party themes will help with inspired decorations and cute summer clothing, like matching family outfits and adorable toddler girl dresses. With some organization and planning, you’ll have a blueprint for endless summer block parties. As the party host, you may even create a new neighborhood tradition!
