50 Ways to Practise Self Care

50 ways to practice self care by Vicki Psarias/ Honest Mum

I’ve come to realise that whilst I’m pretty good, maybe even, GREAT, at caring for others, I can be a little bit rubbish at caring for myself- and practising self-care. Not always, I go through phases of doing yoga daily, eating well most of the time and taking time out from my busy schedule but at other times, I often find myself run-ragged and in dire need of a reminder to slow the down and chill out. So this is my reminder. For me, as much as for you.

I hope it inspires.

  1. Take a bath. I used to bath in the day when my boys were babies as it was a fun and soothing thing to do together and while we often still takes bath together, bath time helps me chill out, anytime of the day. Add some aromatherapy oils and chill.
  2. Turn off the tech. Give yourself a break and get up and take a walk in the day. Fresh air clears the mind. Try and switch tech off 2 hours pre-bedtime for a deep sleep.
  3. Spring clean your life. Step away from negative people. Unfollow people who don’t make you happy online and work towards not worrying what others think of you.
  4. Run. Running makes me happy. It releases endorphins and lifts me up, however bad I might be feeling.
  5. Get on the map and practise yoga. With incredible how-to YouTube videos, the downward dog has never been easier.
  6. Pamper yourself. I love to get my nails done and make it a fortnightly ritual. Polished nails make me smile. So do spa days.
  7. Get your hair done. A colour, cut and style can make you feel like a new person. Go give your mane some loving.
  8. Light some candles, say a prayer, put positive vibes out into the universe.
  9. Star gaze. Nothing makes me feel more humble or grateful than remembering how small I am in this huge universe of ours. Looking at the stars gives me perspective.
  10. Pop your PJs or coat on the radiator so when you wear it, it warms you up.
  11. Keep a gratitude diary and make a note of all the things you’re grateful for, daily.
  12. Take your time to cook or bake and enjoy eating it slowly, savouring the love that went into making the dish and the flavours.
  13. Learn to play an instrument.
  14. Go to the cinema. Film is a gift, nothing can transport you across time and space like the movies.
  15. Read a book and have several on the go.
  16. Organise your home and work space. Take anything you no longer need or like to charity.
  17. Practise positive affirmations. This article on the Huffington Post offer 35 positive affirmations that will change your life.
  18. Visualise your dreams. Every day.
  19. Have a girl’s night out with great friends.
  20. Do something out of your comfort zone.
  21. Get some Vitamin Sea. Nothing feels more calming than being by the water.
  22. Take a walk in the countryside.
  23. Take a disco nap. A short sleep in the day can make you more relaxed and productive.
  24. Fill your home with flowers.
  25. Bake fresh bread.
  26. Enjoy a cup of green or herbal tea.
  27. Call someone you love. Tell them that you love them.
  28. Hug those you love for no reason but to show love.
  29. Dance it out in your living room.
  30. Watch your favourite show. First Dates is mine!
  31. Watch the sun rise.
  32. Watch the sun set.
  33. Go shopping on your own with no interruptions.
  34. Go to the theatre/ballet/opera.
  35. Watch your favourite band or musician live.
  36. Plan a holiday/weekend/break.
  37. Reconnect with old friends.
  38. Meditate.
  39. Visit somewhere new for the first time.
  40. Visit a museum/art gallery and be inspired.
  41. Start a new creative project.
  42. Watch the clouds, pick out shapes you can see and chill out.
  43. Write a list of all the compliments you’ve ever been given.
  44. Give to others: compliments and donations to charity.
  45. Do something you’ve been putting off.
  46. Have a good laugh. I have friends who make me laugh until I can’t breathe. Watch comedy you love too.
  47. Ask for help if you need it. Understanding weaknesses is a strength.
  48. Talk it out. Find someone you trust and talk about your worries.
  49. Pet an animal.
  50. Remind yourself you deserve what you seek and are enough.
