I’ve been reflecting on the year that’s just gone a lot overย the Christmas break as it was a time where I totally kicked back, hung out with those I love without deadlines or school runs and it got me thinking about what I’d do differently this year. What I’d like to switch up in 2017.

Reading Fitness star Zanna Van Dyke‘s brilliantly inspiring post this morning, 7 Changes I’m Making in 2017 encouraged me to get those thoughts onto (digital) paper. To put it on the blog. It always makes me more accountable when I blog about my plans so here’s what I hope to do differently this year.

  1. Be kinder to myself. That means taking my own advice and practising self-care every single day even if it means just 20 minutes on the mat doing yoga or reading a book in the bath. I’m good at taking care of others (I love it, I was maternal pre-kids too, just ask my uni mates who all survived thanks to my cooking!) but I’m guilty of putting myself last far too frequently which leaves me shattered, anxious and prone to crazy PMT episodes rendering useless too. Frazzled mama is not good for anyone. I’m going to stop making excuses and will try to work out most days with a rest day too, and I’m going to chill the heck out more, and not just when everything’s gotten too much either. I’m going to bank that ‘me time’ so I have reserves when life gets too much.
  2. Saying no more. I got pretty good at this to be fair and I even wrote a post about it last year, and hilst I’m in a good place and feel happy in my skin, who I am and what I’m doing, I’m often plagued with guilt if I say no to events, emails and others’ requests. I do need to say no more and not worry it will offend people if I do. Saying no more means being able to say yes more too. I definitely need to prioritise my time better and this is the year it happens. Saying no to things or events that don’t make sense to me or my business means I get time with those who matter most: my family and friends and they allow me to focus on all that nourishes me.
  3. Consistently eating healthier food. I go through stages where I’m incredibly virtuous when it comes to food but then I get bored quickly and indulge like it’s Christmas every day, for weeks on end. This year, I’m going to be more balanced about the way I eat. Everything in moderation as the Greeks say (or is that just my Dad?!). Treats should be just that: treats- not coffee with squirty cream every single day like a greedy guts. I want to eat more plants too and be more ethically minded when it comes to food. I loved doing Veganuary last January and whilst I won’t be going vegan, I do want to get more greens and meat alternatives into my diet for sure.
  4. Direct more. I was a multi award winning filmmaker and director pre blogging and vlogging and whilst I do lots of video collabs and vlogs on my platforms, this is the year I’m ramping it up and putting my years of experience and skills to greater use. Video is exploding and I’ll be back in the director’s chair as well as firmly in front of the camera Clint Eastwood style (if CE did FB Lives and YT) more. And action…
  5. Letting my hair down more. I had a few wild nights this last year and my annual girlie holiday to Cannes which was epic and took 2 weeks to recover from but I’m all about letting my hair down more in 2017. Why? Because taking that time out for me, precious, silly, carefree fun with friends makes me a happier person and better mother, wife and blogger.

    Self care is as important as you care for your family. Every women start to care for herself. She always compromise if thing is related to her. I will also try to care myself.

    Love these, being kinder to myself is one of my top actions this year. Not only not being so hard on myself, but also indulging myself in activities that are solely for me, playing the violin again and reading more books.

Being kinder to myself is the biggest thing that I plan for 2017, I have been so cruel to myself over the years, I wouldn’t treat my worst enemy the way I have treated myself and I think it’s a huge wake up call when I look at it that way.     I am feeling really positive about 2017. This time last year, I had no idea that I would start a blog and that I would love doing it so much. So I’m excited to see what new things THIS year has in store. I wonder what I might try next!

    These are all great plans I can relate to. I am feeling excited about the new year too and I am going to make sure I plan in more ‘me time’ and definitely a few girls’ nights out. Like you, I also really want to do more of what I did before and get back into the journalism. No doubt you’ll smash it, and I’m planning to as well!!

    I read your post on saying NO more the other day, and it’s just so true! I too have written a blog on 7 self-care areas that I need to give more attention to in 2017. For me it’s all about that.     Fab post! I definitely need to take a leaf out of your book as all of your points (except the directing) are things that I really need to work on too. This year I also want to be successful at blogging. In the past, I’ve started things and got a fair way then fell at the last hurdle. With blogging I want to go all the way and make it my profession this year so that I can stay home with my wonderful (grumpy teething) Baby. I just need to learn not to get disheartened when things don’t happen as quickly as I want them to.

    It sounds like you’re all set to have a great year Vicki, it’s so important to look after yourself (and so easy to neglect when you’re a busy Mum). This year I want to try and be more consistant with my diet and excersise, I’m like you one extreme or the other.

    Fab post Vicki! Saying ‘no’ more and eating more healthily are two things I worked on last year and will continue to do so again this year… Finding more ‘me time’ is something I failed spectacularly at last year, so one to work on this year for sure! Last year’s surprise was the discovery that I love running – I went on a beginners’ running course run by my local jogging group and was amazed by how much fun I had! (this is the girl that dreaded PE at school) So this year I want to do more running and maybe build up to a half marathon. My other ambition is to find my abs – I’m sure they are their somewhere but I haven’t seen them in nearly 9 years!! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Eb x

    I’m already really good at taking care of me (yay for not having kids at home!) but what I’m useless at is organising my time efficiently. I’m great at organising others but when it comes to me, I’m far too chilled out… which leads to working 12-16 hours a day because I flit from one thing to another, and always do ‘just one more thing’. I’m determined to, as they say, work smarter not harder (I already work really hard!). There’s so much I want to achieve this year, I absolutely have to give myself a kick up the butt or else I’m going to be permanently exhausted!

    Which leads me to the other thing…. the E word! I so, so, so need to start working out again but it’s just getting up the impetus to start. I am the woman of a thousand excuses! Silly thing is, I know that once I’m in the habit, I’ll be fine (I actually enjoy going out for a run) but it’s making that first move that’s the hardest part. Monday will be my start though; I want to be able to climb, without stopping, to the top of the 500ft hill behind my apartment by May. And hike the mountain trails. And generally not feel like such a slug!

    Self care is top of my list too. It’s so easy to always fall to the bottom of the list and then have no time to spend on yourself. But in reality it does no one any good. You can’t fill anyone’s cup from an empty one.
