A Weekend at Broom House in Yorkshire for the Dorset Cereals B&B Awards

Broom House

The weekend just gone saw this family head to our happy place of the Yorkshire Coast to spend some quality down time in the breathtaking Broom House on Egton Bridge as part of the Dorset Cereals Dorset B&B Awards campaign.

Broom House have been nominated for the awards and we were excited to discover this acclaimed B&B for ourselves.

Broom House

Arriving at the grand location on Friday evening, set firmly in rolling Yorkshire countryside near Whitby, we were greeted by vases upon vases of my most favourite flower: sweetpeas, handpicked from the owners Michael and Georgina’s glorious garden at the back of the property.

My mother introduced me to sweetpeas as a young girl and they were the very first flowers I ever grew, I remember watching in awe as they slowly climbed a pretty frame in the garden across weeks, utterly captivated by their delicate beauty and fragrant signature scent.

If anyone knows of a perfume of that fragrance, please let me know.

Out of season, Michael informed me this batch had in fact bloomed late with tonnes spiralling skywards in their (still) blooming garden. A super omen at the start of our stay.

We were allocated a cottage suite for the weekend, a small luxe pad adjacent to the main building which housed the other B&B’s suites.

It was picture postcard pretty there. Teal doors and soft floral furnishings, a Country Homes & Interiors Magazine style dream.

Originally stables, there was a bed downstairs in the lounge for Oliver, and Peter and I shared our double with little Xander.

There were three in a bed and the little one said, ‘Roll over’…We might have played that game a few thousand times 😉

Luckily a sweet chocolate brownie favour saw us through! Talk about a midnight feast!

And how stylishly shiny is the ensuite?!

Lying in the bath, this was my view!

Isn’t it wonderful to stay in such a staggeringly beautiful location, you just want to stick around there for as long as possible?! Particularly when you have kids.

Laura Ashley and John Lewis furnishings and lights were effortlessly combined with antique pieces and original features, for a modern take on country chic that makes the B&B feel homely and warm,  yet luxurious all at once.

Once the sun came out I’m full beam, we set about roaming the tranquil countryside. Broom House overlooks the Esk Valley making long walks a must. The boys loved the winding River Esk (the sound of running water makes you switch off completely) and we spotted swooping birds, apple trees and forget me nots on our journey to the village centre, closeby.

The Postgate

A location used for Heartbeat back in the day, it had such a endearing atmosphere, bursting with character and such a jolly, kind owner, we felt ‘right’ at home as we Yorkshire folk would say!

Oh and who could forget Peanut, the pup. We all fell rather in love with this sweet dog who joined us for dinner that night. The kids are desperate for their own dog but Peter and I are still undecided…

What a tasty meal with wonderful company, furry and otherwise..

Speaking of food, breakfast in the dining room at Broom House was also incredibly delicious- the taste, quality of local ingredients and attention to detail by accomplished chef Michael made the mornings a real pleasure.

The couple were the perfect hosts it must be said, nothing was too much trouble from extra water in the room to meeting our little one’s requirements for breakfast (Oliver can’t eat gluten).

A sweet twosome who moved from Cambridge to the village after falling for the area, they were committed to offering us a relaxing stay in a home from home for us.

Here they are, hard at work in the kitchen.

The boys adored the comfy armchairs in the breakfast room while Peter and I enjoyed fresh coffee. The perfect position for them to enjoy the view.

….Sunday saw tropical temps hit Yorkshire so where better than to cool off by the beach.

Sandsend Beach to be exact. The kids were simply ecstatic running through the shallow river that led to the sea, and Alexander screamed with joy whenever he spotted seagulls by the beach front.

There is something so rejuvenating about sea air. I love how humbling being by the ocean makes me feel.

I really wish we lived by the beach. Maybe one day huh?! Peter and I love spotting sweet beach front houses and making plans for our retirement down the line.

And all that sea air meant the boys fell asleep on the drive home.

What an epic weekend away. Broom House, we loved you. Thank you.

We hope you win the Dorset B&B Awards, you deserve to!
